When Trump puts name on COVID relief IRS letter it’s BAD, but when Biden does it, no biggie

President Joe Biden is taking credit for distributing direct payments under the American Rescue Plan last month, sending out a letter via the IRS. Former President Trump got roundly criticized for doing something similar, but no such attacks are being leveled at Biden for the letter.

Over the next few weeks, tens of millions of Americans who have received their third round of stimulus checks courtesy of the Democrats’ American Rescue Plan will be reminded of the supposed generosity in a letter from President Biden. Critics who castigated former President Trump when he sent out a similar letter are now slamming Biden for the move.

The letter even boasts underlined sentences highlighting that Biden was responsible for the issuance of the funds.

It may come as a relief that recipients are not being audited, but instead are receiving a form of alleged propaganda from the Biden administration patting themselves on the back for promises made and kept.

“A key part of the American Rescue Plan is direct payments of $1,400 per person for most American households,” Biden states in the letter. “This fulfills a promise I made to you, and will help get Americans through the crisis.” The funds that he is taking credit for reportedly came into being and were passed under Trump.

According to Newsweek’s Elizabeth Crisp, the administration originally claimed they were not going to do it but it happened anyway: “The White House had said last month that Biden’s name would not appear on letters tied to the stimulus checks, a la Trump, but I just got this in the mail…”

Asked after the passage of the administration’s COVID relief package, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki stated that Biden’s signature would not appear on relief checks. “This is not about him,” Psaki informed reporters in March. “This is about the American people getting relief, almost 160 million of them.”

The letter goes into other facets of the $1.9 trillion stimulus measure that was passed in March. It states that some of that “will help you as well.” Listed are “aid for small businesses, an expanded child tax credit for families, and resources to reopen schools safely.”

The left is pointing out that the letter acts as a reminder that if you haven’t received the stimulus check that you should check with the IRS.

The letter seems identical in its formatting to the one sent out by Trump when the first round of stimulus checks were mailed in April of 2020. Both letters were sent via the IRS on the White House letterhead. Both began by addressing, “My fellow American.”

Trump’s letter was branded as “self-aggrandizing … at taxpayer expense” by the center-left watchdog group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.

Noah Bookbinder, who is the president of CREW, claimed there were “aggravating factors” in Trump’s letter, such as using his own signature on the checks. Nevertheless, “this trend toward presidents sending self-serving signed letters at taxpayer expense is unfortunate regardless of who does it,” he noted, adding: “I hope that President Biden will not learn the wrong lessons from his predecessor and continue this kind of tactic.”

Chuck Schumer also actively worked to keep Trump from putting his name on any more stimulus checks.
