Delaware State Police Corporal Keith Heacook incurred massive head trauma after he was brutally attacked following his response to a violent rampage in a housing subdivision Sunday morning. An elderly couple across the street also sustained significant injuries.
The suspect, Randon Wilkerson, 30, assaulted Officer Heacook inside a home at approximately 5:12 a.m. on Sunday. He is now being charged with attempted murder and other offenses. Wilkerson is now at the Sussex Correctional Institution under a $451,000 cash bond according to Fox 29. It is unclear exactly what transpired in the residence.
The 22-year police veteran was knocked unconscious during the attack and suffered serious head injuries. Heacook responded to the call alone. The officer was found by a Wicomico County Sheriffs Office Deputy and a Delaware State Trooper when he did not respond to the dispatcher over his radio. He is now fighting for his life at a trauma center in Baltimore.
“Keith is fighting for his life right now and he needs your prayers along with the elderly couple who were also injured,” Delmar Police Department Chief Ivan Barkley stated. “Members from the Delmar Police appreciate the outpouring of community support as we continue to move forward. We appreciate the support from the Delaware State Police, Wicomico County Sheriffs Office, Maryland State Police, and all other agencies who responded and are assisting with this investigation.”

According to police, the suspect also forced his way into the home across the street of a 73-year-old man and a 76-year-old woman and beat them with a glass object after knocking on their back door. Both the man and the woman were hospitalized with serious injuries. The woman has also been transported to the trauma center in Baltimore.
A 911 caller reported that the suspect, who was later identified as Wilkerson, was being disorderly and fighting with other residents inside the first-reported home. Just moments later, another 911 call was placed by a neighbor of the original caller claiming he and his wife had been attacked by the suspect who was no longer in their home.
Wilkerson was spotted by the police walking on the back of the property where the initial 911 call was made. He was arrested without incident and charged with attempted murder, assault, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, burglary, assault, and terroristic threatening.
Multiple individuals in the house were taken into custody when additional units from the allied police agencies arrived according to the statement released by the Delaware State Police.

“Corporal Keith Heacook is a 22-year veteran and has been employed with our department since 1998,” Chief Barkley sadly noted in a statement. “He is a husband, son, brother, and father. Keith is fighting for his life right now and he needs your prayers along with the elderly couple who were also injured.”
“This is not the call you want on a Sunday morning,” Barkley said.

It is noteworthy that police officers face potential danger every time they answer a call. If they are forced to second-guess their training, the outcome can result in serious injury or the death of the officer. Details are still vague on the altercation but Heacook was evidently trying to get the situation under control when he was attacked.
