It was a ‘wallop’ of a game for one parent who was sucker punched by a coach for allegedly giving a look the coach didn’t like.
In a viral video posted by a parent at a children’s flag football game in Niles, Michigan, the cell phone camera caught the heated action as the coach completely lost it and became irate, yelling at the officials on the field.
Multiple adults began ushering the coach off the field at which point the coach walked up to one of the parents on the sideline, pulled back his fist and then popped it right in the parent’s face, which took the parent to the floor.
Niles police Capt. Kevin Kosten told WNDU, “The victim, the person who got punched, came to the police department to report that he was assaulted and apparently the coach didn’t like how this spectator was looking at him.”
“He referenced that maybe he was smiling at the coach and so this coach just happened to punch him, sucker-punch him, which to me means punch him in the face,” he continued. “There’s definitely a possibility that he could be charged with assault and battery. Some of that will certainly be up to the victim, but assault and battery would be an appropriate charge in this case.”
In the video, a child can be heard crying in the background of the chaotic scene, “Mommy, I want to get out, I want to get out now.”
A police report with charges will likely be filed once the coach can be positively identified.
In an interview with local WNDU News, Ed Salvagni, the parent who took the video, told the reporter he had to make the “tough decision” and pulled his son out of Midwest Performance Academy a week before this incident because nothing was done after similar encounters which involved his child.
He explained the coach wasn’t the “only bad coach there.” The parent is also a baseball coach and said he too can be “fiery and fiesty,” but said you “have to have a level of restraint. You can’t be that amped up that you assault a parent, bystander, anybody, in front of children.”
The WNDU reporter tried to reach out to the Academy, but was asked to leave their property before he could ask any questions. Surprisingly, the Midwest Performance Academy touts a 95% recommend rate on its own website.
Throwing punches at games appears to be the new norm. Just last week, an out right brawl happened at an Indiana girls basketball game, resulting in the referee being body-slammed in the middle of the court.
