Police in California on Friday released bodycam footage showing an exchange of gunfire between a homicide suspect and an officer before the suspect himself was shot and killed.
Thirty-four-year-old Joshua James Gloria of Oakland died March 24 after he shot at Officer Brian Burch of the Fremont Police Department following a brief car chase, according to authorities.
Burch, who has been with the department for six years, was working traffic on a motorcycle when he received an alert that a nearby vehicle had activated a license plate reader camera.
According to the alert, the vehicle had been reported stolen and subsequently used in an armed robbery in San Francisco, according to police. Burch identified the vehicle and began tailing it to a parking lot at a shopping center before ordering the driver to pull over.
The driver, who was later identified as Gloria, instead took off, pulling over to the side of the road on State Route 84 a short time later.
As seen on Burch’s bodycam, Gloria then exited his vehicle and began to run towards the officer, firing at him. Burch was forced to abandon his motorcycle and run down a nearby embankment to get out of the line of fire.
As he recovered and pulled his service weapon, Gloria can be seen on the bodycam attempting to steal Burch’s motorcycle. But he appears to have seen the officer approaching so he ditched the motorcycle and began running towards his vehicle when he was struck by gunfire from Burch and killed.
Officials with the San Jose Police Department said the agency had an arrest warrant issued for Gloria for attempted murder and for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Police said he was wanted after he allegedly shooting someone several times at an illegal gambling hall. The person survived despite being struck in the back of the head while lying on the ground.
The incident comes as police are coming under new scrutiny following other officer-involved shootings of young black suspects, but also of suspects attacking officers and resisting arrest.
In December, a black and Latino U.S. Army officer was pepper-sprayed and taken to the ground to be handcuffed after repeatedly refusing to follow officers’ orders to show his hands and failing to pull over for a mile-and-a-half after despite their use of flashing lights during a nighttime stop. One officer was summarily fired for the incident, and the Army officer, 2nd Lt. Caron Nazario, has filed suit against them and the Windsor, Virginia Police Department.
Another officer in Brooklyn Center, Minn., a suburb of Minneapolis, resigned along with the police chief, Tim Gannon, after she shot and killed 20-year-old Daunte Wright, appearing to mistake her service weapon for her Taser.
After police pulled him over for an expired tag on his vehicle, they discovered he had an outstanding warrant related to misdemeanor charges stemming from 2020 and sought to arrest him. But as one officer prepared to place him in handcuffs, he broke free and dove back into his vehicle. As the officer struggled with Wright, the female officer, Kim Potter, can be heard on her bodycam yelling, “Taser! Taser!” before firing one round into Wright, who then sped off but crashed his vehicle a short time later and died.
And Saturday morning, NYPD officers were allegedly assailed by Lionel Virgile, 44, a black man from Connecticut who threw some sort of chemical at one officer and a lit Molotov cocktail at a pursuing squad car.
