Ontario yields to major backlash, retracts sweeping pandemic police powers

After severe backlash, Ontario officials retracted new Orwellian restrictions implemented Friday that would have required any person outside of their home to explain the reason why.

In this latest totalitarian power grab, officials weren’t shy about announcing their new restrictions were “the strictest in North America.”

“We have made the deliberate decision to temporarily enhance police officer’s authority for the duration of the stay at home order,” Solicitor General Sylvia Jones said on Friday. “Moving forward, police will have the authority to require any individual who is not in a place of residence, to first, not provide the purpose for not being at home, and provide their home address.  Police will also have the authority to stop the vehicle, to inquire about an individual’s reason for leaving their residence.”

The government officials had the audacity to declare those people that “absolutely must come to work, are strictly following the public health orders.”

The officials themselves were seen on video in what appeared to be a government building, speaking without masks on. They further did not provide comment on why they did not have the discussion remotely, as many public agencies have been able to do over the course of the pandemic.

A caller asked, “what happens if a person refuses to answer the police questions?

The official responded, “If you are not willing to comply, you are breaking the law.”

The restrictions received immediate backlash. The orders seemed to target outdoor activities, which have been lauded as safer when compared to indoor activities.  The CDC’s website specifically states that you are less likely to be exposed to COVID-19 when participating in outdoor activities.

The announcement made no mention of exemptions for specific types of activities such as protests that, at least prior to the pandemic, have been protected activities in most of the western world.

Others likened the restrictions to Nazi Germany, where Jewish people were rounded up and required to show their paperwork.

One Twitter user indicated that the virus itself might be mutating into “Totalitarian Dictatorship.”

Many police departments refused to enforce the orders.  Halton Police Chief Steve Tanner tweeted reassurance to the public that they would not be randomly stopping vehicles for no reason at any time.

After the backlash, Jones announced that the restrictions had been reversed and police would no longer be able to randomly stop people from being outside of their house.

However, she said police may still require residents to provide information to ensure they are in compliance with established restrictions if the officer has reason to suspect the person is participating in an “organized public event or social gathering.”

Canada continues to outdo themselves with their extreme pandemic related restrictions. A church in Calgary was fenced off to prevent parishioners from gathering in the church.  A Polish American pastor in Calgary was also harrassed while holding a Passover service, but police were run off by the pastor as he shouted at them, Gestapo, “Nazi, communist fascists! Don’t you dare come back here!”
