U.S. Capitol Police Inspector General Michael A. Bolton is reportedly set to release a 104-page report on Thursday documenting the security failures that had preceded the Jan. 6th riot at the U.S. Capitol.
In many ways, the upcoming report bears shocking similarities to the myriad reports from years earlier that had documented the security failures that had preceded the Benghazi terror attack in 2012.
According to The New York Times, which reviewed Bolton’s report in advance of its release, it highlights a series of “lapses and miscalculations.”
U.S. Capitol Police were warned multiple times
Three days before the riot, U.S. Capitol Police’s own intelligence unit warned of potential violence.
“Unlike previous post-election protests, the targets of the pro-Trump supporters are not necessarily the counterprotesters as they were previously, but rather Congress itself is the target on the 6th,” a warning from Jan. 3rd reportedly read.
It continued, “Stop the Steal’s propensity to attract white supremacists, militia members and others who actively promote violence may lead to a significantly dangerous situation for law enforcement and the general public alike.”
The Department of Homeland Security meanwhile “warned the agency that it had found a map of the Capitol complex’s tunnel system posted on pro-Trump message boards,” according to the Times, and the FBI’s local department “also relayed concerns.”
Yet when U.S. Capitol Police pieced together its operations plan for the riot, it reportedly wrote that there were “no specific known threats related to the joint session of Congress.”
U.S. Capitol Police prohibited use of its most powerful weapons
Bolton also found that U.S. Capitol Police leaders had ordered riot units to abstain from using their most powerful weapons.
“Heavier less-lethal weapons were not used that day because of orders from leadership,” the report reportedly reads.
While this is framed as being the result of incompetence or maybe even bias, not mentioned in the Times’ own reporting is that Democrats and their media allies had spent all of the previous summer castigating police nationwide for using these same weapons against rioting left-wing extremists.
Also not mentioned is that these extremists had ultimately wreaked far more damage than the Capitol rioters. Moreover, they’d also killed multiple people. The Capitol rioters, meanwhile, were initially suspected of having killed one Capitol Police officer, though the officer’s actual cause of death still remains unknown.
U.S. Capitol Police had defective equipment
The equipment that U.S. Capitol Police officers were allowed to use reportedly turned out to be defective.
“[T]he inspector general found that officers responding on Jan. 6 had been outfitted with protective shields that had been stored in a trailer without climate control and ‘shattered upon impact.’ In another case, officers frantic for something to protect them could not use their shields during the siege because they were locked on a bus,” the Times reported.
Likewise, some munitions in the department’s armory were reportedly found to have already been expired.

The production and release of this IG report on the Capitol riot raises some questions about double standards.
For reasons that remain unclear, a similar report was never produced after left-wing extremists tried to breach the U.S. Capitol during and after Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation in 2018.
A similar report was also never produced after left-wing extremists set St. John’s Episcopal Church on fire multiple times last summer and — during an incident near the White House — attacked the police with “bricks, frozen water bottles and caustic liquids.”
“At approximately 6:33 pm, violent protestors on H Street NW began throwing projectiles including bricks, frozen water bottles and caustic liquids. The protestors also climbed onto a historic building at the north end of Lafayette Park that was destroyed by arson days prior,” then-Capitol Police chief Gregory T. Monahan reported in a statement on June 2nd.
He added, “Intelligence had revealed calls for violence against the police, and officers found caches of glass bottles, baseball bats and metal poles hidden along the street.”

This statement was issued after Democrats and their media allies began disparaging U.S. Capitol Police for allegedly using tear gas to control the extremists.
Yet as Monahan explained in his statement, U.S. Capitol police were forced to respond with pepper balls (not tear gas) specifically because of the extremists’ violent behavior,
“As many of the protestors became more combative, continued to throw projectiles, and attempted to grab officers’ weapons, officers then employed the use of smoke canisters and pepper balls. No tear gas was used by USPP officers or other assisting law enforcement partners to close the area at Lafayette Park,” his statement read.
But in response to this statement, the media attacked him again, this time by accusing him of distorting the truth and smearing the extremists.
“Arguing that authorities did not use tear gas gives the false impression that irritants weren’t used against the crowd, and attempts to draw a technical distinction between two nonlethal compounds that have the same broad effects on people, causing blurry vision, burning in the eyes and nose, and more,” a CNN “fact-check” reads.
It seems that to Democrats and their media allies, there are two standards of justice — one for violent rioting left-wing extremists, and one for violent rioting right-wing extremists.
In the case of left-wing extremists, it’s not even OK to use pepper balls when they attack the police. But in the case of right-wing extremists, it’s perfectly OK for the police to beat them into submission …
