Blame game: Politico poll dares ask if Fox News, CNN to ‘blame’ for mass shootings

A new poll released by Politico asked respondents how much they blame Fox News, CNN, and others for mass shootings.

The Politico/Morning Consult poll asked: “How much do you blame each of the following for mass shootings?” Topping the list was Fox News but others were listed as well, including CNN, the NRA, illegal gun dealers, easy access to guns, violent video, mental illness, lack of access to treatment for mental illness, and bigotry such as racism, sexism, or homophobia.

The majority of respondents blamed things such as illegal gun dealers, easy access to guns, racism, and mental illness. However, the number of people who seemed to be blaming media outlets was substantial with 34 percent blaming Fox News “a lot” or “some” and 24 percent blaming CNN.

The makeup of those who blamed Fox News is sobering, as 47 percent of Democrats blamed the conservative network, which comes as no surprise. But 29 percent of Independents polled felt that way and 18 percent of Republicans shockingly did as well.

Meanwhile, 32 percent of Republicans blamed liberal-leaning CNN. Again, that seemed like no surprise. But 20 percent of Independents and 20 percent of Democrats did as well. That worked out to approximately one in five Republicans who blamed Fox News for mass shootings and one in five Democrats who blame CNN. Liberal MSNBC was not included in the poll.

A majority of Americans, 52 percent, also seemed to place the blame for mass shootings on video games.

President Biden came out on top and was the least likely to blame for the mass shootings in the poll, as 21 percent responded that he deserves “a lot” or “some” of the blame. In addition, 40 percent believed that Republicans in Congress were the most likely political leaders to be held responsible while 23 percent blamed Democrats in Congress. And in a telling statistic, 70 percent of Democrats were much more likely to blame Republicans, while 40 percent of Republicans blamed their Democratic counterparts.

Alarmingly, gun control was heavily supported according to the poll, with 83 percent of respondents indicating they want background checks implemented on all gun purchases. As well, 73 percent are in favor of a three-day waiting period to get a firearm while 72 percent want further safe storage laws mandated. Unbelievably, 70 percent support a national database of firearms sales and 64 percent are in favor of another assault weapons ban.

The poll was conducted between April 9-12 with a margin of error of +/-2 percent. 1,992 registered voters reportedly took part in the poll.

The Politico poll covered a wide range of topics including President Biden’s performance, the upcoming 2022 midterm elections, the coronavirus and the availability of vaccines, Biden’s infrastructure plan, the border crisis, a global minimum corporate tax, the favorability of certain political leaders, and gun control. Heavy emphasis was placed on the gun control issue.
