‘Total lie’: Matt Gaetz demands retraction of CNN’s anonymously-sourced story on Trump snub

U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who has been relentlessly attacked by the left over allegations of sexual misconduct, tweeted out Sunday night that a CNN report claiming that former President Trump refused to meet with him was “a total lie.”

“This is a total lie. I am on a pre-planned vacation with my fiancée. I was welcomed at Trump Doral days ago. No such meeting was denied nor sought,” he stated. Gaetz referenced CNN’s two “anonymous sources” and then demanded that the media outlet issue a full retraction.

The report cites “two people familiar with the matter.” It claims that Trump’s aides denied a request from Gaetz to meet with him and stated that they had urged the former president to distance himself and to not get involved in the alleged scandal surrounding the congressman. The report also referenced a statement from Gaetz’s spokesman who denied that he requested a meeting with Trump this past week.

Gaetz is a staunch supporter of Trump. He was vacationing at the Trump Doral Golf Club in Miami with his fiancé, Ginger Luckey, which evidently prompted the report by CNN.

Trump’s top aide Jason Miller bashed the CNN report: “This @CNN story is complete fake news. No such scheduling or meeting request was ever made, and therefore, it could never have been declined. Take note that this story has zero on-the-record sources. It’s literally made-up. We are demanding a full retraction. #FakeNews”

Trump also blasted the report via the social media platform Gab:

“Fake News CNN, relying on all anonymous sources, meaning they probably made the whole thing up, wrote a very dishonest story claiming Congressman Matt Gaetz asked for a meeting with me at Mar-a-Lago, in Palm Beach, Florida, and was denied. This is completely false. Why doesn’t CNN investigate and write about lightweight Democrat Congressman Eric Swalwell, who had a torrid and physical relationship with the Chinese spy Fang-Fang, but is somehow on the once-prestigious House Intelligence Committee. Swalwell, who ran for President and dropped out with a record-setting 0% in the polls, has been compromised and is a national security threat to the United States—he should be removed from the Committee immediately!”

Gaetz is being investigated for alleged involvement in sex trafficking which he adamantly denied and vows to fight the charges. The sex trafficking charges stem from allegations that he paid a 17-year-old girl to fly across state lines to have sex with him. Gaetz contends all of these are “unfounded allegations.” He is claiming that it is part of an attempt to extort $25 million from him and his family.

The congressman has hired a powerful legal team to represent him against potential charges from the Justice Department, though no charges have been filed to date.

“Matt has always been a fighter,” a spokesperson for Gaetz told Fox News on Friday.

Gaetz flatly stated on Friday that he wasn’t going anywhere and was going to fight: “The smears against me range from just distortions of my personal life to wild – and I mean wild – conspiracy theories. I won’t be intimidated by a lying media, and I won’t be extorted by a former DOJ official and the crooks he is working with. The truth will prevail.”
