A very popular gun channel on YouTube called “Justin Opinion” that reviews guns, gears, and ammo has suddenly been demonetized because the social media platform has labeled its content “harmful.”
The channel was never created to make money but there are costs associated with doing the videos. Justin will no longer be able to recoup those costs from ads that he runs on the channel and will have to limit what he reviews in his videos because of it.
The Justin Opinion channel was started in 2012. It has had over 23 million views and touts 84,000 subscribers.
The owner claims the reasoning behind the demonetization seems arbitrary and vague to him. He says he has followed all of their policies and has never violated any content rules. Since he is a small fish in the YouTube pond, there is no one at the social media company he can go to with his complaint or appeal their decision.

“From where I sit, it seems extremely arbitrary,” he stated. “There was no information given that was of any use to me. I have always tried to comply with policies and to the best of my knowledge, I do comply with their policies of YouTube and, but they say ‘harmful content’ is the reason.”
“We’ve made this arbitrary and vague ruling that drastically affects you, good luck with that,” Justin noted. “So, that is the, that is the hatred that is, that is the YouTube organization towards its ‘partners.’”
Reclaim the Net is reporting that the channel was targeted because of the content streamed from a peaceful protest that “show[ed] someone holding, handling, or transporting a firearm.”
Ad revenue covers roughly 40 to 50% of the expenses on the channel. Keeping it alive now will be a challenge as Justin has invested a lot of money in equipment and can’t afford to buy products to review.
“I have recently invested a whole lot of money, a whole lot of money in video-making gear and equipment,” Justin remarked. “So, it’s ironic that having just spent all this money and learning to play with some of these new tools, comes at a time when YouTube says ‘Oh and by the way, we’re not gonna allow you to make a single penny from your videos.’”
Justin is asking his thousands of followers to support his work through his Patreon account in order to keep the endeavor afloat.
“For my channel, it’s never been more than a handful of loyal viewers that contribute, and to whom I remain extremely grateful. Crowdfunding is not a great long-term option because it is so volatile, but it does help. My Patreon model is that patrons are charged only when I create content – so there is no danger that you’ll pay a monthly donation and no new video will be released. It’s ‘per video’ for that reason. You can also set a limit so that you know what your max contribution will be with no surprises. I don’t like to be the Oxy-Clean guy in every video and beg people to join…but it’s there,” he commented.
“It doesn’t mean I’m not going to make any videos but it definitely means I’m not going to make very many videos because as much as I love doing it and as much as I feel like I have to do it, whether there’s any money in it or not, I would be a complete idiot to just spend tons of money producing videos that I can’t get any money back from,” he explained.
“I’m not a wealthy person. I don’t have those resources. I don’t have the means to do that,” Justin candidly stated.
Justin Opinion is just the latest gun-related channel to be demonetized by the social media giant. C&Rsenal and The Honest Outlaw have also been demonetized by YouTube under their vague content guidelines.
