Creepy pandemic décor: Whitmer stages MSNBC interview with Fauci pillow in background

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer may have been unloading on Republicans during a remote MSNBC interview, but sharp-eyed viewers seemed more interested in her background decor.

During a video interview with MSNBC on Thursday, Whitmer blasted Republicans in her state over changes being proposed to voting laws. But a hard-to-miss image of Dr. Anthony Fauci on a pillow in the background got the attention of many viewers.

The Democrat proclaimed in her interview that the U.S. just conducted a “historic, free, fair, full election.”

“There was not fraud the way that this big lie perpetuated and fed into people’s anxieties and inspired the unthinkable on January 6. But the fact of the matter is this a solution in search of a problem and it is unacceptable and so, if and when those bills get to my desk and they’re aiming to make it harder for people to vote, they will get vetoed,” she concluded, as the black pillow with Fauci’s image could be seen on a shelf in the background.

While Whitmer displayed an idolized Fauci, she came under attack by him for allegedly easing COVID restrictions too soon in the state of Michigan. Many in that state would find that charge ludicrous as Whitmer has imposed some of the strictest COVID mandates in the nation.

Fauci said Whitmer was a good governor on CNN but gave leaders a warning: “But I am telling them, just hold off for a bit,” on easing up on some of the restrictions.

“When you get the overwhelming majority of your population vaccinated, the chances of there being a surge are minuscule. So just hang in there, don’t turn the switch on and off, just pull back gradually, not all at once everything all things are off and everything goes, that’s not a good idea,” Fauci stated.

Whitmer defended her actions: “I think that sometimes at the national level there is interchange between the thought that a state is dropping their mask requirement is the same as a state moving from 25% restaurants to 50% of restaurants.” After that, she fawned over Fauci, saying she had a great deal of respect for him.

During the interview, the governor tore into the Michigan Legislature and accused Republicans of risking the lives of the people in her state because they were withholding funds slated to be sent to Michigan unless she drops some of the emergency powers that she has used to implement draconian pandemic restrictions over the last year.

“I have been very clear throughout that I am not going to give up those powers. They are inherent to the governor’s office. Many governors over many years have used those powers to keep people safe. They were critical to our COVID response,” Whitmer stated, justifying her mandates. “We need the Legislature not to play games here, to deploy these resources that have been sent to Michigan.”

She went on to allege that Republicans were taking part in “partisan politics” following the legislature suing for information related to Whitmer’s handling of the nursing homes in Michigan during the beginning of the pandemic.

“This is sadly politics pervading our public health still,” Whitmer defensively declared. “We are not going to get distracted. I am going to stay focused on getting my state through this tough time and keep moving forward.”

“Gov. Whitmer’s regional hub policy placed patients with and without COVID-19 in the same facilities and may have increased the death toll in those facilities,” state Sen. Jim Runestad noted in a statement. “We need to know how this happened and why it was allowed to happen; we need to figure out why the data doesn’t add up. Grieving families are tired of the stonewalling. We need an investigation now because families deserve answers.”

The GOP-led Michigan Legislature has proposed 39 bills to strengthen voter laws. The proposed legislation requires ID for new voters, limits the number of absentee dropboxes, prohibits prepaid absentee envelopes, and blocks the secretary of state from sending out an absentee ballot unless one is requested.
