Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) was on “Fox News Sunday” with Chris Wallace discussing gun control when he disclosed that he owns an AR-15 for the specific purpose of defending his home — and he’s not about to kowtow to Democrat gun reform efforts.
Wallace asked Graham: “Senator, first of all, the two bills that the House has passed, that the Senate is now considering, have to do with background checks. They wouldn’t take away your guns. And what’s wrong with a serious debate after all of these shootings about assault weapons and especially about large-capacity magazines, which a lot of studies show contribute to these mass killings?”
Graham went on to challenge Democrats to bring an assault weapons ban to the Senate floor. He stated that it would not get the required votes unless they change the filibuster rule: “There’s nothing wrong about debates. As a matter of fact, I would challenge Sen. Schumer to bring the assault weapons ban to the floor of the United States Senate. It won’t get 50 votes, much less 60,” he noted.
“I own an AR-15,” Graham told Wallace. “If there’s a natural disaster in South Carolina where the cops can’t protect my neighborhood, my house will be the last one that the gang will come to because I can defend myself. You don’t have to have an AR-15, but if you have one lawfully, I think you should be allowed to keep it.”

Graham has made this claim before. In 2019, he stated onboard Air Force One that he owned a semiautomatic rifle and that it was in case “there’s a hurricane, a natural disaster, no power, no cops, no anything.” He also said that gangs and looters would know better than “to come to the AR-15 home.”
Graham is pushing a “red flag” law which a number of staunch constitutionalists allegedly oppose on the grounds that determining whether someone is mentally fit is subjective and can be abused for political or personal reasons. That law would bring mental health into the mix when qualifying to own a gun. However, the senator is ostensibly a strong supporter of Second Amendment rights overall.
“Count me in for addressing that issue. Red flag laws exist in 19 states. There are some things we can do, but at the end of the day, if you think an assault weapons ban is what the country needs, bring it to the floor of the United States Senate and vote on it,” Graham declared.
If you really believe banning AR-15s is the answer to the problem, Senator Schumer should bring the assault weapons ban to the floor of the Senate for a vote.

After his statement to Wallace, leftists on social media and on news networks tore into him. Among those was Parkland shooting survivor Cameron Kasky. He parroted the left’s talking points that the senator “was being fed a narrative from gun manufacturers about “apocalyptic” scenarios.
“The suggestion that a twerp like Lindsey Graham can be some sort of tough guy fending away apocalyptic invaders is just the narrative that they sell,” Kasky nastily quipped on MSNBC’s “The Mehdi Hasan Show.”

There has been a lot of noise that the Democrats will pursue an assault weapons ban, especially after the shooting in Boulder, Colorado that claimed ten victims, including a police officer. President Biden has urged Congress to take swift action on gun control and he is threatening Executive Orders as well.
The House has passed a bill that expands background checks for those purchasing guns. While Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) believes that the bill could reach 60 votes in the Senate, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) is not throwing his support behind it yet.
