Miami Beach gone wild! City declares state of emerg. for brawling spring breakers who defy curfew, twerk on cop cars

The coronavirus pandemic is on the steady decline, and nothing appears to exemplify this more than an 8:00 pm curfew that was instituted in Miami Beach this week.

But wait, wouldn’t the curfew prove that the pandemic is still raging? It would, except this curfew has far less to do with the pandemic than it does with wild, out-of-control spring breakers who’ve been partying and fighting like it’s 1999.

Speaking on CNN early Saturday evening, Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber explained.

“[D]uring the day, it’s pretty tame. People go to our 6.5 miles of beaches. The restaurants or hotels are doing a pretty good job with outdoor dining. But at night, in the entertainment district, it becomes a whole different scene. It feels like a rock concert. Wall-to-wall people over blocks and blocks,” he said.

“Last night, somebody shot a weapon in the air. There was a riot. Other things have happened that are similarly challenging. So it feels like a tinder. It feels like any match could set it off. We don’t want to wait to take these kinds of actions in the wake of a tremendous tragedy. We want to take it now when we’ve seen enough. We have definitely seen enough.”

The “other things” included a  brawl that erupted at an Ocean Drive restaurant on Thursday that was so massive that local officers were called to the scene and reportedly had to use pepper balls to disperse the crowd.

“Cell phone footage from a witness who was at the restaurant showed fists flying and people scrambing [SIC] to get away from the fighters. A restaurant server told police that tables were being overturned and silverware was being thrown as weapons,” local station WTVJ reported.

“The cell phone footage showed officers arriving at the scene a short time later. ‘Pepper balls were deployed against the ground to disperse the large crowd,’ the police reports said. Police said multiple people were arrested for disorderly conduct at the scene.”

Because of incidents like this, of which there have been many, Gelber declared a state of emergency and instituted an 8:00 pm curfew on Saturday.

“We declared an 8:00 pm curfew. We also will be closing our causeways, other than local traffic, coming into our island city at 9:00 pm every night for the next few nights,” he said on CNN.

However, the curfew didn’t seem to work.

For their part, the authorities did at least try to enforce the curfew.

Because of these kids’ unruly behavior, #DeathSantis was trending on Twitter Sunday morning, as if the governor was to blame for their horrible actions.

It’s not clear how he’s responsible for spring breakers twerking on cars:

It’s also not clear how the governor is responsible for some of the spring breakers literally trying to kill one another:

The only thing that’s for certain is that the pandemic is on the decline, which is why the focus has returned to the historically deplorable behavior of spring breakers.

“Spring break in South Beach got off to a chaotic start this weekend. Miami Beach Police were forced to shut down Ocean Drive Friday night as a wave of brawls swept through the crowd. The next night, the revelry turned bloody,” the Miami New Times reported in 2016, years before DeSantis took office.

“As horrified partiers looked on, 20-year-old Antoinne Decade was shot in the chest just after midnight Saturday in the middle of Ocean Drive. Miami Beach Police officers swarmed the scene within seconds, but they couldn’t save Decade or catch his shooter.”

As noted by Gelber on CNN this Saturday, Miami Beach is “always going to be one of the best destinations in the world” for spring break “because we have so much to offer.”
