De Blasio chased off by hostile crowd after being heckled during anti-Asian hate vigil

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio’s attempt to participate in an anti-Asian crime vigil at Union Square this Friday fell by the wayside when the rallygoers reportedly heckled him and chased him away.

Video footage from the event showed him trying to express his solidarity with all Asian Americans as some of the onlookers kept shouting “what are you going to do about it?”

Video footage also showed him ducking into a vehicle and fleeing the scene as the rallygoers surrounded his car and continued to heckle him.

Watch:

The rally was one of many that occurred nationwide Friday in response to the deadly mass shooting at three Asian-owned massage parlors in Atlanta earlier in the week.

“A diverse crowd gathered on 14th Street in Manhattan to demand an end to hate crimes and bias after a lone gunman killed six Asian women and two others in Atlanta-area attacks on Tuesday night,” the New York Post reported.

“Mourners lit candles, held signs reading ‘Stop Killing Us’ and ‘Stop Asian Hate,’ and laid flowers in front of makeshift memorials, as politicians and advocates addressed protesters.”

Despite the focus by Democrats and their media allies on just the mass shooting in Atlanta, which has received widespread attention because the perpetrator is white, anti-Asian crime has been rampant for a year now.

“Hate crimes involving Asian-American victims soared in New York City last year. Officials are grappling with the problem even as new incidents occur,” The New York Times reported late last month.

It’s believed these crimes have been motivated in part by the coronavirus pandemic and the belief that all Chinese people deserve blame for the gross incompetence and lies of the Chinese Communist Party.

One of the first incidents happened in February of 2020 when a black homeless man called an Asian woman who’d been standing outside a subway “diseased” and then punched her, causing her to lose two teeth.

But thanks to New York’s Democrat-crafted bail reform laws, the suspect wound up being released without bail shortly after his arrest.

The same thing has happened to countless other criminals thanks to the laws:

  • Tiffany Harris, who allegedly assaulted 4 Jewish women, and in one instance did so while reportedly yelling “F U Jews!”
  • Gerold Woodberry, who was arrested after allegedly robbing 4 banks, reportedly knocked off another after being released without bail
  • Jorge Flores-Villalba, who allegedly killed a mother of three in a hit and run, and much to the distress of the victim’s loved ones

These bail policies are strongly supported by de Blasio, who believes requiring that suspects pay bail is somehow racist.

De Blasio is also a strong proponent of discrimination against Asians.

“New York City has some famous selective high schools, such as Stuyvesant and the Bronx Science, that determine admission solely by scores on the Specialized High School Admissions Test,” National Review noted in 2018.

“The result is a politically incorrect mix of students at these schools — not many blacks and Latinos, some whites, and lots and lots of Asian Americans — and this makes Mayor Bill de Blasio sad. He wants, in particular, more black and Latino kids at these schools, and of course this means fewer of the others, particularly Asian Americans.”

And then last year, the city’s so-called “racial inclusion and equity task force,” which is co-chaired by his wife, began doling out handouts to businesses owned by women, blacks and Hispanics — but not Asians and whites, according to the New York Post.

The move was so glaringly discriminatory that City Councilman Peter Koo, a Democrat, reportedly said, “We are sick and tired of constantly having to remind this administration that we exist.”

By “we,” he meant Asians.

Indeed, it seems like Asians only ever exist to the left when they’re useful in parroting a narrative — particularly a narrative against so-called “white supremacy.” Otherwise, they’re just privileged “white-adjacent” people.

And so it seems that, despite the rare bouts of virtue-signaling from the likes of de Blasio, members of the left don’t actually care about Asians.

As an example, consider how de Blasio reacted in August when, while visiting Chinatown, an Asian bakery owner pleaded with him for help over the damage his businesses had sustained because of the mayor’s strict coronavirus restrictions.

The mayor called the man’s story “unfortunate” and then turned his back on him and indifferently walked away.

Responding to the heckling Friday, one Asian Twitter user suggested in a tweet that, just like the mayor’s trip to Chinatown, his appearance at the vigil was nothing but a “photo op.”
