Mayor outraged feds are turning his struggling Ariz town into waypoint for unvetted migrants

Recall the media backlash when former President Donald Trump voiced the idea of sending illegal immigrants on the southern border to Democrat-run sanctuary cities?

With the Border Patrol now being overwhelmed by a wave of Biden-inspired illegal immigrants, with many being released into the continental U.S. after President Biden reinstituted “catch and release,” the agency is not supposed to hold them longer than 72 hours and this is resulting in a steady influx of migrants into local communities.

Gila Bend Mayor Chris Riggs appeared on Fox News to express his concerns about the impact that decision is having on his small Arizona town. Located halfway between the border with Mexico and Phoenix, the town, Riggs told the network, is essentially being made into a waypoint for illegal immigrants captured by federal authorities.

“We can barely afford to take care of the people that we have here and our community now, and as of the 2nd, the Border Patrol has advised us that they’re going to drop people off here and do sort of like this: ‘They’re your problem,'” the mayor said.

Riggs said Gila Bend is already “very economically depressed” and does not have the means to take care of the “big increase in foot traffic coming in.”

“We just do not have the ability to care for these people. Quite frankly, it’s going to cost us tens of thousands of dollars a year to be able to just to provide them with a bottle of water and a sandwich when they get dropped off,” he said.

Migrants from Central America began marching on the southern border even before Biden took office, motivated by overtures made by the Democrat, including a vow to establish a pathway to citizenship for the millions of illegal immigrants in America — the number is readily disputed, with the media settling on 11 million, but others say the number could be anywhere between 20-30 million.

Some of those turning up at the border wear Biden t-shirts and call on him to allow them entry — and in many cases, he is obliging.

While Biden recently informed Americans “there’s a good chance” they can have a backyard cookout on the Fourth of July if “we do our part” in fighting the pandemic, the administration is releasing illegal immigrants into the country without testing them for COVID-19.

The mayor told Fox News host Charles Payne that federal agents are not providing any crucial information to help them prepare, including coronavirus infection rates. He explained the town has a lot of seniors and elders who are susceptible to the virus.

“We have not seen the [coronavirus] outbreak that other areas have seen in Arizona, yet we’re going to get punished for their choices,” Riggs said. “We’re completely in the dark. We asked for documentation, some kind of documentation — give us something and we’re still not getting anything.”

“So I mean, we’re really frustrated with how we’re being treated for a crisis that they started,” he said, referring to the federal government.

NBC News reported earlier this month that 108 illegal immigrants in Brownsville had tested positive for COVID-19. The city does rapid testing on migrants awaiting busses destined for U.S. cities, after they are released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
