In what proved to be his first primetime address to the nation, President Joe Biden marked the one year anniversary of the COVID-19 lockdown, essentially taking credit for a vaccination program the previous administration is largely responsible for.
Biden opened with a falsehood, taking a veiled shot at his predecessor, claiming that we “were hit with a virus that was met with silence, and spread unchecked, denials for days, weeks, then months.”
He also laid out a goal to make all adults eligible for the COVID vaccine by May 1, and vowed that if Americans “do their part,” they may be allowed to gather with family for the Fourth of July.
“If we do this together, by July the 4th, there’s a good chance you, your families and friends will be able to get together in your backyard or in your neighborhood and have a cookout and a barbecue and celebrate Independence Day,” Biden said. “That doesn’t mean large events with lots of people together, but it does mean small groups will be able to get together.”
Credit Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, for noting in a tweet that there’s a problem with Biden’s math: “If every willing person in America is vaccinated for #COVID19 by May, as POTUS has said, why put our lives on hold till July the 4th?”

Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., also took issue with Biden’s audacity to dictate what Americans can or cannot do.
“If you’re waiting for permission from the chief executive to celebrate Independence Day with your family, you clearly don’t grasp the concept of Independence,” tweeted the lawmaker.

Rep. Jim Jordon, R-Ohio, had a much simpler idea: “Freedom.”
Here’s an idea, Mr. President: Freedom.

Rep. Lauren Boebert, the firebrand Republican freshman from Colorado, nailed it with her analogy of where things are today in America, asking: “Where did we go wrong?”
King George III: Take their arms and tax them!
Patrick Henry: Over my dead body!

Joe Biden: You might be able to celebrate Independence Day.
Liberals in 2021: Thank you Dear Leader.

Fox News host Tucker Carlson also slammed Biden Thursday night for his remarks.
“Who are you talking to?” Carlson asked. “This is a free people, a free country. How dare you tell us who we can spend the Fourth of July with!”
There were plenty of others on the right who took issue with Biden’s remarks, the irony not lost on them — here’s a sampling of some of those responses from Twitter:
On the 4th of July, we celebrate America and our many freedoms. One of those freedoms is that YOU get to decide if you want to have family and friends over in your own backyard, NOT the government. https://t.co/xl1ovY9sef

My entire neighborhood got together last July 4th. We shock fireworks illegally and we drank beer and the kids played. Like Americans do. We’ll be doing the same thing this next July 4th and I don’t care what any government stooge has to say about it. https://t.co/uGZ4wvNeUf

Joe Biden just said by July 4th you might be able to gather with small groups to celebrate if all goes well. Or you can go sit and watch a baseball game with 40,000 people in a sold out MLB stadium in Texas on April 5th. #texasforever #stoplivinginfear

Biden apparently doesn’t understand what Independence Day means.

I have news for President Biden

Last night Joe Biden told us if we’re all good little sheep maybe we will be allowed to gather in our backyards for the Fourth of July… who wants to tell him we don’t need his permission?
