High school basketball announcer blames his use of the n-word on blood sugar spike from diabetes

A high school sports announcer from Oklahoma has blamed a blood sugar spike from his type 1 diabetes for his decision to call a group of black female high school basketball players “f–king n—-rs” …

This stunning remark was reportedly prompted by players from Norman High School taking a knee during a game Thursday against Midwest City High School.

As the players were taking a knee, announcer Matt Rowan could be heard complaining about the protest on a hot mic.

“They’re kneeling? F—king n—-rs. I hope Norman gets their ass kicked. F–k them. I hope they lose. They’re gonna kneel like that?” he could be heard saying to another announcer.

“Are you serious?” the other announcer can then be heard asking.

“F–k them. I hope they lose. Come on Midwest City. They’re going to kneel like that? Hell with them. They even saluting the flag? Some of them aren’t. F–king n—-rs!” Rowan can then be heard continuing.

By Saturday morning, the clip above had spread to virtually every corner of the Internet, sparking loud, angry outrage from everybody, including kneeling NFL stars Kenny Stills and Gerald McCoy.

Rowan meanwhile managed to greatly exacerbate the life crisis he’s now facing by first denying any culpability and trying to throw his fellow announcer under the bus.

“Matt Rowan, owner of OSPN, the live-streaming platform that broadcasted Thursday’s game, [said] in a phone interview Friday afternoon he was not the person heard making racist comments,” The Frontier, a news agency in Oklahoma, reported.

But hours later, he finally relented and issued a statement admitting his guilt.

“During this time I was with a colleague and friend Scott Sapulpa. Scott Sapulpa was not the one that made these comments, it was me and me alone. It is not my desire to shirk my responsibility in this matter and I certainly do not want Scott Sapulpa to share in the blame of this most unfortunate incident,” he said.

However, he then made things even worse for himself by blaming his clear-cut remarks on his type 1 diabetes.

I will state that I suffer Type 1 Diabetes and during the game my sugar was spiking. While not excusing my remarks it is not unusual when my sugar spikes that I become disoriented and often say things that are not appropriate as well as hurtful. I do not believe that I would have made such horrible statements absent my sugar spiking,” he said.

Last but not least, he claimed he’s not racist.

While the comments I made would certainly seem to indicate that I am racist, I am not. I have never considered myself to be racist, and in short cannot explain why I made these comments,” he said.

The statement provoked another, even fiercer round of backlash.

Look:

You get the picture.

It seems unlikely that Rowan’s company, OSPN, will ever be contracted again by Norman Public Schools, let alone any school district.

“We condemn and will not tolerate the disgusting words and attitudes of these announcers. This type of hate speech has no place in our society and we are outraged that it would be directed at any human being, and particularly at our students,” NPS Superintendent Dr. Nick Migliorino reportedly said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association has launched an investigation and vowed to not run anymore televised events this season, according to The Washington Post.
