‘All but used the word uppity’: CNN folks accuse Fox News of hitting Meghan Markle because she’s black

On Don Lemon’s CNN show on Tuesday night, USA Today columnist Kirsten Powers trashed Fox News for its coverage of Meghan Markle, accusing them of racist undertones in calling out Markle’s Oprah Winfrey interview.

Powers and Lemon went after Fox News contributor Joe Concha, Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo, and Ainsely Earnhardt on “Fox & Friends” during selective sound bites. They highlighted clips where the Fox News personalities pointed out that an elitist Markle is allegedly playing the race and victim cards with Winfrey.

Bartiromo stated: “She just is saying that she wasn’t getting the support she needed and all of this stuff.”

Earnhardt made her opinion clear on Markle: “I was hearing ‘Cry me a river.’ She was a princess living in a castle and she didn’t want a part of that.”

Concha really nailed Markle as someone he would not want his daughter to emulate: “I’m hoping that I can mold her to be everything that Meghan Markle is not. In other words, that she is entitled. She is a chronic complainer, Markle is. She plays the race card from the bottom of the deck it appears, as well.”

That triggered both Powers and Lemon who proceeded to grandstand on their disdain for Fox News and conservatives.

Lemon led with the first attack: “Why is the Prince Harry and Meghan Markle story so triggering because usually the right claims ‘Stick it to the elites, right?’ And in this case, it seems to be siding with the British monarchy. What?”

“What happened to the Tea Party?” Powers said in a monumental reach for comparison. “This country, by the way…was founded in opposition to the people — to the monarchy which they are the biggest defenders of and they’re so worried about the Queen and Prince Phillip and all these other things.”

“I think it goes beyond the fact that Republicans benefit from it politically,” Powers commented. “I think that they are very offended by the idea that Meghan Markle, a black woman is not grateful, she’s supposed to be grateful, Don, and she is like — and they all but use the word ‘uppity’ in the clip that we just listened to, right? So how dare she complain. She should just sit there and be quiet and be thankful that these people let her in their family.”

“They have constructed this whole ridiculous narrative that somehow money or privilege can protect you from racism,” Powers stated in her final attack on Fox News. “It is utter — I’m not going to say the word, but it is not true. That’s not how things work. It does not protect you. No amount of privilege will protect you from racism.”

“I’ll give you some letters,” Lemon chimed in. “B.S., does that qualify?”

“Yes,” Powers agreed.

Lemon previously bashed the Royal Family during an interview on Monday, claiming that the monarchy was “built on racism.” He stated after the Winfrey interview that he doesn’t believe that “anyone who watched it, especially any person of color, is surprised that the British family – that there is racism there.”

“That is what the monarchy is based on: heredity, hierarchy, a caste system, bloodlines,” he posited.

Lemon proceeded to go all-in with the race card: “The whole institution is built on a racist structure. So there should not be a ‘Oh my God, the British family is racist’ – of course they’re racist. That’s what the entire monarchy is built on – the racism, the family that is supposed to be in it only by birth. And so far by birth, it’s only been white royals on the British throne.”

Lemon continued: “We shouldn’t be like, ‘Oh my God, the British family’s racist.’ Yeah, the system is racist.”

Lemon lashed out at critics, stating: “They always have to rush to Twitter and criticize someone or get in on it because they want relevance. Well, you’re not relevant anymore. And stop trying to be relevant on the backs of black people.”

During that same interview, Lemon said: “Listen, we shouldn’t be surprised that you have a black woman from America who, in their eyes, is a commoner and then you have this white, redhead British royal, people wanted to know what the baby was going to look like. But what matters is your reaction. If you say, ‘Oh, this baby is going to be a beautiful brown baby with red hair, I can’t wait to see it,’ then that’s a different reaction from, ‘Oh my dear, what color is his skin? Is he going to be too dark?'”

“When people say, ‘Oh, well we haven’t heard from the other side,’ what’s the other side going to say?” Lemon stated. “They’re going to say, ‘Of course we’re not racist,’ or whatever, but what did they do? Think about their actions. They did not stand up for their own because their own is married to a black woman, they had a black child. They didn’t listen to him inside of the Royal Family. They let him go, they let him leave the country. They wouldn’t come to terms with what they [Harry and Meghan] wanted to do.”

“So listen, we have only heard from one side, but that one side, at this point, rings very true,” Lemon concluded.
