‘Sit this one out’: Gavin Newsom torched for shrill reaction to Texas reopening

California Gov. Gavin Newsom excoriated Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Tuesday over lifting coronavirus restrictions, claiming it risks a viral resurgence and calling it “absolutely reckless” on Twitter. He was immediately torched for doing so.

Newsom did not use Abbott’s name but his meaning was crystal clear. The disgraced California governor was incensed over Abbott dropping the state’s mask mandate and on top of that, allowing businesses to once again operate at full capacity.

“We’re never going to subscribe to the point of view of some other states. There was one large state today that said ‘no masks, everything goes back to normal’ in the midst of a pandemic,” Newsom arrogantly told the press in San Luis Obispo. He also claimed Texas has a higher COVID death rate than California. He used statistics provided by the New York Times.

Newsom went on to insinuate that Abbott’s decision could very well lead to a resurgence of the virus similar to the one California experienced where he imposed draconian lockdown measures.

“We’re a little more mindful and sober of the potency of these variants and mutations as well, more mindful and sober of the experience we had last summer where we moved forward and ultimately had to revert back and we don’t want to do that ever again,” Newsom arrogantly stated.

Governor Abbott took a much different stance: “With the medical advancements of vaccines and antibody therapeutic drugs, Texas now has the tools to protect Texans from the virus. We must now do more to restore livelihoods and normalcy for Texans by opening Texas 100 percent.”

“Make no mistake, COVID-19 has not disappeared, but it is clear from the recoveries, vaccinations, reduced hospitalizations, and safe practices that Texans are using that state mandates are no longer needed. Today’s announcement does not abandon safe practices that Texans have mastered over the past year. Instead, it is a reminder that each person has a role to play in their own personal safety and the safety of others. With this executive order, we are ensuring that all businesses and families in Texas have the freedom to determine their own destiny,” he said in his statement.

After Newsom’s faux pax at a ritzy restaurant where he was caught dining maskless with more than ten friends during a birthday party, he seemed oblivious to the fact that numerous people are now labeling him a hypocrite for going after Governor Abbott.

“Because it should only be you and your buddies allowed those privileges?” Rep. Burgess Owens (R-UT) scoffed Tuesday, asserting that Newsom ignores his own rules.

Newsom is now facing a recall after the way critics say he mishandled the pandemic in California. According to Politico: “Critics have seized on fluctuating restrictions and the fact that many California children have not returned to school in nearly a year. Texas required schools to open in the fall while Newsom and California lawmakers have left that decision up to local districts, many of which are still struggling to negotiate reopening conditions with teachers unions.”

Matt Vespa at Townhall.com nailed Newsom for his “do as I say, not as I do” mentality: “Sit this one out, sir. I mean, you’re going to be facing a recall election since you couldn’t follow your own COVID protocols. Your excursion to French Laundry in Napa will never be forgotten. You were maskless, not practicing social distancing, and eating with members of the medical community and other friends. It’s just too easy. and then, you pretty much [did] the same stunt again with George Lopez?”
