‘Stunning and brave’: Oreo mercilessly mocked for woke, ‘pandering’ tweet on trans people

The official Oreo cookie Twitter account sent out a politically correct message stating that “Trans people exist” and social media proceeded to melt down over it. The tweet followed the House of Representatives voting to pass the Equality Act this week.

The Equality Act seeks to add sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation to the 1964 Civil Rights Act. But many stand against the legislation because it is allegedly unfair to female athletes and is seen as potentially dangerous for underage girls since transgenders will be allowed into female-designated bathrooms and locker rooms. The bill is expected to receive strong opposition in the Senate.

Oreo cookies are an American staple and this PR move by the company appears potentially directed at their younger audience as they boldly stated that they are pro-transgender. Oreo’s Twitter account has approximately 1 million followers.

The tweet went viral, now showing over 499,000 likes. “Oreos” is trending on Twitter as well under the unlikely topic of “politics.”

The snack brand received heavy criticism for engaging in identity politics. They were mercilessly mocked for being “stunning and brave” in their proffered statement on social media. Commenters pleaded with Oreo to “Just make cookies, please.” Many could not juxtapose Oreos and politics.

Comedian Josh Denny hit it out of the dessert aisle: “When did y’all start double-stuffing your politics down our throats?”

Some counseled the cookie maker to make donations to trans charities if they are so concerned about transgender people.

Lisa Booth, a Fox News contributor, blasted the brand: “Why even take a political stance on this? This is why America is so divided. Even cookies have to be divisive.”

Even more devastating was the response from conservative activist Melissa Tate: “Thanks captain obvious. Their existence is not in question. The question we are asking is should biological men be displacing women & girls like in sport, trampling on our rights & our existence as women.”

Journalist Michael Tracey snarked: “Evidently a Zoom meeting was held where somebody said something to the effect of: ‘Our emerging customer base wants their gender identities validated by a mass-produced cream-filled cookie product.'”

A number of people online saw the company’s statement as “using trans rights as marketing” and accused Oreo of “pandering.”

The company is owned by Mondelez International. They have made a staggering $26 billion in profit every year since 2008.

According to TheBlaze, the company’s politics are selective: “Some noted that the human rights group International Rights Advocates filed a federal class-action lawsuit against Mondelez and six other big-name chocolate makers in 2019, alleging the corporations were complicit in child trafficking and forced child labor. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of eight Malian men who claim they were forced to harvest cocoa in the Ivory Coast after being trafficked as children.”

Many of the largest chocolate companies on the planet signed a pledge in 2001 to eliminate “the worst forms of child labor” from their West African cocoa suppliers. But Mondelez refused to sign it.

Oreo celebrated Gay Pride last year with a special limited edition rainbow Oreo: “The first and largest organization for #LGBTQ+ people, their parents and families, and allies.”
