Ted Cruz pulls no punches at CPAC, optimistic on 2022, 2024: ‘Donald J Trump isn’t going anywhere’

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, wasted no time mocking his detractors on Friday as he spoke at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando, Fla.

“I gotta say, Orlando is awesome,” Cruz opened, before deadpanning, “It’s not as nice as Cancún, but it’s nice.”

This being, of course, a reference to his ill-fated trip to Mexico last week while Texas was enduring a winter storm that left many without power as temperatures dropped into the teens.

“We are gathered in dark times,” Cruz then said, turning serious. “We’re gathered at a time where the hard left, where the socialists control the levers of government. Where they control the White House, where they control every executive branch, where they control both houses of Congress.”

“Bernie’s wearing mittens, and AOC is telling us she was murdered,” he added, trying to mimic the New York accent of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, D-N.Y., who claimed protesters were trying to kill her, even though she wasn’t in the U.S. Capitol the day it was stormed.

Declaring the media “desperately, desperately, desperately wants to see a Republican civil war,” Cruz made a play on words from former President Donald Trump that were used by House Democrats used to impeach him.

“Liberty is under assault and what are we going to do? We will fight!” he said.

The senator told the room that the media looks at them as “dangerous radicals.”

“This is the rebel alliance,” he said. “And [Darth] Vader and the Emperor — and let’s be clear, they’re not your father — are terrified of the rebels who are here and I am proud to tell you that [‘The Mandalorian’ star] Gina Carano is standing with us.”

Cruz urged conservatives to defend liberty, highlighting some of the heavy-handed actions taken by various Democratic officials around the country in response to the pandemic. He mocked some of the “strange” rules put in place, particularly with masks.

Not that he didn’t declare that the virus is indeed “dangerous.”

Referencing the National Guard and fences around the U.S. Capitol, Cruz said this is because Democrats “are convinced that political theater helps them.”

“Let’s be clear, this is not about security at this point, this is about political theater,” he insisted. “Half the country, the deplorables, are dangerous and they are going to turn the Capitol into a military outpost in Baghdad just to have their compliant media echo that message.”

Cruz drew great applause when he paid tribute to Rush Limbaugh, who died of lung cancer last week, and the role he played in defending liberty.

In addition to being stalwarts in defense of liberty, Cruz encouraged conservatives to lighten up and have fun in the process.

After getting a shot in at former Republican Speaker John Boehner, who told Cruz to “go f—k yourself” while recording the audio version of his new book — Sen Cruz asked “who’s John Boehner? — the senator said there is “a whole lot of voices in Washington that want to erase the last four years.”

“They look at Donald J. Trump, and they look at the millions and millions of people inspired, who went to battle fighting alongside President Trump, and they’re terrified,” Cruz said. “And they want him to go away.”

Drawing his loudest applause, Cruz added, “Let me tell you this right now, Donald J. Trump isn’t going anywhere.”

“The Republican Party is not the party just of the country clubs,” he proclaimed. “The Republican Party is the party of steelworkers and construction workers and pipeline workers and taxi cab drivers and cops and firefighters and waiters and waitresses and the men and women with calluses on their hands who are working for this country. That is our party, and these deplorables are here to stay.”

Insisting that Biden and his handlers are overshooting with their disastrous policies, Cruz was optimistic about the future.

“Mark my words, 2022 is going to be a fantastic election year, and so is 2024, as we stand together and defend liberty, defend the Constitution, defend the Bill of Rights of every American,” he concluded. “In the immortal words of William Wallace, ‘Freedom!'”
