Media claim DeSantis is GOP-favoring racist for vaccinating elderly doesn’t play well for Cuomo

Seemingly desperate to draw attention away from drowning New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, mainstream media “journalists” are now trying to transform Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s otherwise well-praised “seniors first strategy” into a national scandal.

“Florida governor accused of playing politics with Covid vaccine,” a headline from NBC News reads.

How has he played politics with the coronavirus vaccine? By zeroing in his state’s vaccine coronavirus efforts on communities that contain a large number of seniors, regardless of race, gender and other immutable traits.

“We wanted to find communities that had high levels of seniors, living in there and this obviously has a high concentration,” he said during a briefing Wednesday.

By “this,” he meant two specific zip codes in Manatee County — an area that the media have lamented is too white, wealthy and Republican — that were vaccinated last week.

“The zip codes are two of the county’s wealthiest and whitest,” CBS News complained Sunday.

“Ron DeSantis (R) unveiled a ‘pop-up’ clinic offering coveted coronavirus vaccines in an affluent, mostly White part of Manatee County,” The Washington Post added in its own write-up Thursday.

According to NBC News, the true reason why DeSantis picked these zip codes is that senior citizens are “one of Florida’s most potent voting blocs.”

The left-wing outlet also complained that, by vaccinating seniors first, the governor had violated the CDC’s extremely controversial original vaccine distribution guidelines.

These accusations have rubbed some the wrong way given the the fact that it’s in line with the science to vaccine the elderly first.

Note what the latter Twitter user wrote about Cuomo, who’s been credibly accused by his own attorney general of covering up his state’s egregious nursing home deaths.

The Post has for its part admitted that the Manatee County zip codes were chosen because the community’s residents had complained about the distribution process.

“Residents in Manatee County, which sits just south of Tampa, had grown increasingly frustrated by a randomized selection process used to distribute the vaccine,” according to the Post.

“While about 180,000 people — half the population — had already signed up, Florida’s chaotic rollout and a limited supply have prevented many from getting their shots.”

In search of a solution, the governor then reached out to a campaign donor, Rex Jensen, a real estate developer who built one of the communities in Manatee County.

The Post made sure to describe the community as “mostly Republican, mainly White,” as if that somehow matters. Perhaps it does to the racists of the left.

“Working in private with the county commission chair, Vanessa Baugh (R), they struck a deal. If Jensen hosted an additional vaccination clinic on his development, the governor would offer state health workers to administer the vaccines and National Guard troops to control the flow of people. The supply of those doses would go beyond Manatee County’s weekly allotment of doses from the state government,” the Post reported.

The only possible discrepancy is that the pop-up only served residents of two zip codes versus all of the zip codes in Manatee County. But as noted earlier, DeSantis has claimed these zip codes were chosen specifically because they “had high levels of seniors living in there.”

However, the Post does rightly note that the zip codes “cover much of” the community that Jensen built, not that this proves anything.

Overall, this seems like yet another non-scandal scandal about DeSantis. But why? And why now? The theory from some observers is that the media is trying to distract from the real scandal threatening to engulf New York Gov. Cuomo.
