Eric Trump slams NYC Mayor de Blasio for ‘absolutely petty’ move targeting former president

Eric Trump blasted New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio after he closed both of Central Park’s skating rinks that are managed by the Trump Organization in a seemingly petty effort to punish the former president over the Capitol riot.

The last day for operations for the iconic Wollman Rink and the smaller Lasker Rink will be on Sunday. They need time to pack everything up and move out. The contracts were set to end in April, but de Blasio decided to end them early – on Feb. 26.

In a city reeling from the pandemic, with many businesses going under and even more fleeing the economic devastation wrought by de Blasio, it is hard to comprehend why lucrative ventures such as these family-oriented skating rinks would be shut down. Many see it as politically motivated. The city has announced that they are terminating all four of their Trump Organization concession contracts.

“Trump has been impeached from operating the ice rink,” a de Blasio spokesman arrogantly stated on Jan. 31. The concession terminations include Wollman Rink, Lasker Rink, the Central Park Carousel, and the Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point in the Bronx.

De Blasio tweeted: “New York City doesn’t do business with insurrectionists. We’re taking steps to TERMINATE agreements with the Trump Organization.”

“Despite our appeals to the City to allow us to continue operations through the duration of the skating season — which would not only save the jobs of nearly 250 individuals who work or otherwise provide services Wollman and Lasker Rinks, but also allow us to continue to provide the numerous public skating sessions and skating and hockey programs that we host on a daily basis — the City rejected our efforts,” the Trump Organization said in a released statement, according to the New York Post.

Former President Donald Trump’s son Eric, the executive vice president of the Trump Organization, called de Blasio “petty” in his move to end the contracts. He also said he was sad to know that children would not be able to make use of the ice rinks.

“The city is saying in effect, ‘We don’t care if it destroys the skating season; we want you out now,'” the younger Trump told the Post. “This is one of the only things that kids can do” for outdoor winter recreation.

“De Blasio is now shutting down skating season while New York dies. It’s horribly sad,” Trump continued.

“The mayor is absolutely petty. This isn’t about us, this is about the people of the city who come here to skate and disabled kids who joined hockey teams and others who joined skating school and take lessons every week,” he proclaimed.

“This is purely a political stunt that only hurts New Yorkers,” Trump said. “Instead of focusing on a dying city which everyone is leaving because of rising crime, high taxes, closed businesses and totally incompetent leadership, the mayor is painting signs in front of Trump Tower and destroying more jobs along with the only outdoor activity available to children during a pandemic. Why? To get back at a person who sits on the other side of the political aisle and now lives in Florida? ‘Let’s cancel kids’ programs six weeks early, that will show Trump.’”

The contract terminations are being appealed. That includes New York City’s attempt to remove the Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point, an endeavor worth millions with 18 years left on its contract. There is sure to be a court battle over that venture.

“If they terminate, they will owe us $35 million,” Trump said. The question is, would they pay up and would a judge force New York City to do so?

Former President Trump was honored for opening and rebuilding the Wollman Rink in 1986. Since then, it has been a popular spot for families to gather who like to skate or play hockey.

The Parks Department has officially confirmed that they have issued a termination notice and it has been delivered to the Trump Organization. It has an effective date of Feb. 26.

“We are working diligently through our competitive RFP process to secure new operators for these great amenities so as not to impact the respective seasons,” Parks spokeswoman Crystal Howard stated.
