Calls to lower flags to honor Rush Limbaugh roll in and Gov. DeSantis makes the first move

After conservative legend Rush Limbaugh passed away on Wednesday, there have been a number of calls to fly state and national flags at half-staff in his honor, including by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert.

Limbaugh called the state of Florida his home for decades. His home and studio are located there and that is where he died and will be laid to rest.

On Friday, at a press briefing, DeSantis confirmed that he would order the state’s flags to be lowered once Limbaugh’s burial date is announced. The gesture is a sign of deep abiding respect and honor bestowed on those who are revered and are close to the hearts of Americans.

“What we do when there’s things of this magnitude, once the date of internment for Rush is announced, we’re going to be lowering the flags to half-staff,” DeSantis told constituents in West Palm Beach on Friday.

Limbaugh originally came from Missouri, but “The Rush Limbaugh Show” was broadcasting for three hours daily out of Palm Beach for many years. Millions tuned in each day to enjoy the most listened-to conservative radio personality in U.S. history. Since his passing, tributes and well wishes have flooded the Limbaugh family while leftists have spewed hatred incessantly on social media. Limbaugh’s fans are in mourning and many believe there will never be another like him to grace the airwaves.

He was diagnosed with stage-IV lung cancer in January 2020 and did not expect to live out the year. Limbaugh beat that prediction. Then-President Trump awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom during his 2020 State of the Union Address soon after his diagnosis and Limbaugh was overcome with emotion as he accepted it.

A number of high-profile figures have eulogized Limbaugh. Gov. DeSantis is one of them. “He obviously was a legend in his field, really incomparable,” DeSantis stated. “He had me on when he was running for governor and I was getting the tar kicked out of me every day … I was honored to appear on his show a couple times. We are going to miss him dearly.” DeSantis and Limbaugh were friends as well.

DeSantis has previously ordered flags to be at half-staff in honor of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, members of the Navy killed in a mass shooting in Pensacola, and for Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, as well as others.

Democrats in the state were furious at DeSantis for even daring to suggest flying flags at half-staff for the father of conservative talk radio.

“Lowering the flag of the United States is a high honor reserved for those who have honorably and bravely served our state and our nation,” State Sen. Gary Farmer said. “Unfortunately, Gov. DeSantis has now transformed this distinction into a partisan political tool to salute a man who served no other interests than his own and did his best to deeply divide a country along political fault lines.”

Freshman Republican Congresswoman Lauren Boebert also urged President Biden to lower flags in honor of Limbaugh’s passing. That is not likely to occur given how the left feels about the conservative powerhouse. Her request was met with vicious responses on Twitter.

Conservatives have been calling on Biden to lower the flags for Rush Limbaugh in a sign of unity. Their calls have been met with silence and the flags have not been lowered.
