House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is now fining two Republicans $5,000 each for bypassing metal detectors before entering the House chamber. Simultaneously, the GOP is calling for Pelosi to be fined because she allegedly bypassed the detectors herself.
According to NBC News, Reps. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) and Andrew Clyde (R-GA) were the first targets of Pelosi’s ire over not following her mandate on metal detectors. Each representative had the fine deducted directly from their $174,000 salaries.
Any member who is found guilty of a second offense will be fined $10,000 per the directive issued by the Speaker of the House. The measure was ratified by the House as well.
On Friday, Gohmert accused Democrats of “making up rules as they go” after he was docked by Pelosi. He says he will appeal the fine and says in his defense that he skirted the detectors only one time to go to the restroom.
“Unlike in the movie ‘The Godfather,’ there are no toilets with tanks where one could hide a gun, so my reentry onto the House floor should have been a non-issue,” Gohmert snarked in a released statement.
“This fine has nothing to do with following the rules and everything to do with furthering the Democrats’ never-ending scheme to demonize and punish their political opponents,” Gohmert commented. “Nonetheless, I have been trying to comply, but it gets difficult to do so when Democrats keep changing the rules and their enforcement.”
Unlike in The Godfather, there are no toilets with tanks where one could hide a gun in the restroom in the Speaker's Lobby off the floor. Re-entry onto the floor, where there is no magnetometer, should have been a non-issue. It has always been until Thurs. https://t.co/TNWr9VUl62

Pelosi had metal detectors installed directly outside the House chamber using the Capitol riot as one excuse. Another reason was allegedly over Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) stating she meant to bring a gun with her onto the House floor.
It highlights the purported fear by the Democrats that their Republican colleagues are a threat to them. New York Democratic Rep. Grace Meng sent out a tweet stating: “This isn’t really helpful in terms of potential future rioters but it’s actually to help protect us from our own colleagues.”
A number of Republicans say they will defy the metal detectors because the Constitution does not allow lawmakers to be detained coming or going from the House floor. Two of those Republicans are Chip Roy from Texas and Thomas Massie from Kentucky.
This is not the only fine that Pelosi is now imposing. She has declared that anyone not wearing a mask will be fined $500 for a first offense. A second infraction will cost a member $2,500. This rule came into being after a number of Republicans refused to wear masks on the House floor. Pelosi is now forcing everyone to comply.
But even as Pelosi hits Republicans with fines over skirting her metal detectors, she has allegedly been guilty of doing the very same thing. Now, GOP members are calling for her to be fined as well.
A letter was sent Friday evening to the Sergeant at Arms by a group of Republicans claiming that Pelosi flaunted her own rules by stepping around the metal detectors as she entered the House floor.
Republican Reps. Rodney Davis, Barry Loudermilk, and Bryan Steil on the House Administration Committee are the ones who wrote the letter demanding Pelosi pay $5,000 for allegedly ignoring House rules she implemented herself.
“House Resolution 73 directs you in your capacity as Sergeant-at-Arms to impose fines against members of the House who fail to complete security screening prior to entering the House Chamber. The resolution, which went into effect upon passage of the House on February 2nd, imposes a fine for $5,000 for the first offense,” the letter read.
“It also directs you to promptly notify in writing of fines being imposed for violations of House Resolution 73. Yesterday, at approximately 9:59 am, multiple members observed the Speaker of the House entering the House Chamber without completing security screening. What was observed was a clear violation of House Resolution 73 and you are required by House Rules to impose this fine. Please inform us once the fine has been assessed.”

Acting House Sergeant-at-Arms Timothy Blodgett responded to the letter as follows:
“House Sergeant at Arms imposes the fine after receiving an unusual occurrence report from the United States Capitol Police (USCP). An unusual incident report from the Capitol Police is appended to the document sent to the Member providing notice of the fine.”
“Only the USCP can determine whether an individual has failed to complete security screening as only the USCP has sufficient training to determine compliance with USCP screening procedures,” he said. “I have directed that the USCP produce and provide unusual incident reports on any individual who fails to complete security screening without exception. I have not received any unusual incident report from the USCP concerning the Speaker of the House.”
