Border Patrol arrests 11 Iranians in Arizona after illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border

On Monday evening, U.S. Border Patrol agents took 11 Iranian citizens into custody after they illegally crossed the U.S.-Mexico border into Arizona ostensibly hoping to capitalize on the Biden administration’s less stringent immigration guidelines.

Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents spotted the group near San Luis at approximately 6 p.m. according to a statement from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. It was determined that the Iranians had entered illegally from Mexico and they were arrested and are being processed at Yuma Station. This comes after President Biden has moved to reverse some of former President Trump’s immigration policies.

The group was comprised of five females and six males. Two were reportedly children. In the group, there were five women, who were 28, 30, 35, 35, and 37 years-old. Four men, ages 24, 31, 36, and 43, were also arrested along with two boys that were 10 and 2 years old.

The statement also says that Iran is a “special interest country.” That means it is a country that the U.S. has determined harbors terrorists and terrorist organizations. It is not known how the Iranians got to Mexico or why they came across the border.

“Yuma Sector agents regularly encounter people from all over the world, including Special Interest Countries,” the statement continued. “Agents adjudicate each arrest in accordance with law and policy in order to secure our nation’s borders.”

Over the last few years, the Border Patrol in Yuma Sector has arrested more Iranians than any other Border Patrol sector. Since October 2020, 14 Iranian nationals have been taken into custody by Yuma Sector agents.

“Iran is a designated Special Interest Country and the agents of Yuma Sector work diligently to protect our borders for the safety of our nation,” the statement said. “Border security is national security.”

National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd wants to know where Mexico was during this incursion and why they did nothing to stop it. He is asking why Mexico was not aware that 11 Iranians were in their country.

Others are concerned about illegal immigration under the Biden administration. Texas Democrat State Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa is ringing alarm bells on Biden’s immigration policies and their hurried implementation according to the BorderReport:

“We checked into it and found out they were just being released to the bus station so they could travel to the interior of the United States with documents saying that would get them through the checkpoint,” Hinojosa stated. “As the Biden administration starts to change policies word of this will get down to South America and Central America and we’ll see an increase of families coming to try to cross the river.”

“These orders are coming in very quickly and not providing time for us to digest it and so we are learning as we go, so to speak, as to what is really happening along the border. Quite frankly our immigration policies are a mess. We really have to focus and come up with a way to manage the situation because for us we have the right to defend the border. We cannot have an open border policy and not be able to manage control of people who come into our country.”

Hinojosa also says that the policies are not taking into consideration communities being exposed to illegal immigrants who are infected with the coronavirus. There is no word on whether the Iranians were carrying COVID-19 or not.
