Gabbard hits Pelosi over ‘enemy is within’ statement, says it’s like throwing a ‘match into a tinderbox’

Former U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) joined a number of conservatives in ringing the alarm bells against the kind of heated rhetoric House Speaker Nancy Pelosi invoked this week. She replied in a press conference when questioned on security measures: “It means that we have members of Congress who want to bring guns on the floor and have threatened violence on other members of Congress.”

Gabbard basically insinuated that Pelosi was inciting violence when she voiced her recent “enemy is within” statement. The former congresswoman called for the rhetoric to be turned down and to bring everyone together. But it is increasingly apparent that is not going to be the case here as the divide between left and right widens and distrust and hatred proliferate.

In Pelosi’s briefing, she stated that Congress will need more funding to provide “for more security for members, when the enemy is within the House of Representatives, a threat that members are concerned about.” Gabbard contends that if Pelosi actually has proof of that, she should take it to the authorities. If she doesn’t, she needs to knock off the divisive political games before things turn very ugly.

Gabbard appeared on Fox News’  “The Ingraham Angle” Friday night and told host Laura Ingraham that it was “incredibly dangerous” for the House speaker to publicly throw out incendiary remarks like that when the country is “on edge” and divided. This sort of propaganda and villainy of the other side of the political aisle can ostensibly breed radicalism and, eventually, violence.

“This kind of broad, inflammatory rhetoric is like throwing a match into the tinderbox,” Gabbard warned. And it is as one can already see on social media and elsewhere the kind of anger and distrust this sort of talk can lead to.

“What Speaker Pelosi is talking about is a very serious thing. If there is evidence to back what she is saying … is true, this is a legal issue for law enforcement,” she contended.

Gabbard recounted how her life was threatened while she was in the House and how she reported it to the police. The suspect was caught and prosecuted. But Gabbard did not toss around unfounded accusations in a political climate that was set to explode.

“What Nancy Pelosi is talking about is a crime of terroristic threatening — and if true, should be reported to law enforcement. Members of Congress are not above the law,” she stated. That is true and Democrats should take note on their side as well. The slander, defamation, and threats they are emitting may be cause for legal action in themselves.

Ingraham asked Gabbard if she thought Pelosi was intentionally inciting violence.

“If you think there is someone among the Republican caucus plotting the murder of Nancy Pelosi or other members of Congress, that could then bring violence upon those individuals,” Ingraham noted.

“That’s the issue here. If this is a [criminal threat], let law enforcement deal with it,” Gabbard replied. “If there is no evidence of what she is talking about, it is inciting further division and further harm, potentially, and further destroying the possibility of our country coming together.”

“This is why it’s so important for Nancy Pelosi — if these accusations are baseless — she needs to apologize — not so much to her colleagues but to the American people who right now, more than ever, need leadership coming from the Speaker of the House, who represents all members of Congress and the American people to bring us together,” Gabbard said.

It was noted in the conversation that President Biden has sidestepped this issue. He has not weighed in on a situation that has the potential to rip the government apart and sow the seeds of radicalism. Not only Democrats such as Gabbard, but Republicans and Americans, in general, are awaiting the president’s solution to the divisiveness and are wondering whether it will unify us or divide us even further.
