House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and former President Donald Trump met privately at Mar-a-Lago Thursday for the first time since Jan. 6th for what was reportedly a “very good and cordial” powwow centered on whipping Democrat butt come 2022.
According to a statement from the Save America PAC, the two “discussed many topics, number one of which was taking back the House in 2022.”
“President Trump’s popularity has never been stronger than it is today, and his endorsement means more than perhaps any endorsement at any time,” the statement continued.
“President Trump has agreed to work with Leader McCarthy on helping the Republican Party to become a majority in the House. They worked very well together in the last election and picked up at least 15 seats when most predicted it would be the opposite. They will do so again, and the work has already started.”

The statement wasn’t wrong.
A Morning Consult poll published Wednesday found that 81 percent of GOP voters view Trump favorably, up from just 76 percent a few weeks earlier. Moreover, 75 percent of Republican voters oppose the former president’s potential conviction.
Meanwhile, the GOP has, in fact, thus far only picked up 14 seats, for a net gain of 11. One seat, NY-22, still remains undetermined because of an ongoing lawsuit challenging absentee and affidavit ballots, though it’s leaning heavily to the right.
In a statement of his own, McCarthy reassured GOP voters that the former president is “committed” to revitalizing the Republican Party.
“Today, President Trump committed to helping elect Republicans in the House and Senate in 2022. A Republican majority will listen to our fellow Americans and solve the challenges facing our nation,” he said.
“Democrats, on the other hand, have only put forward an agenda that divides us — such as impeaching a President who is now a private citizen and destroying blue-collar energy jobs. For the sake of our country, the radical Democrat agenda must be stopped.”
He added, “A united conservative movement will strengthen the bonds of our citizens and uphold the freedoms our country was founded on.”

While these statements may seem like nothing but standard political blather, they actually reveal something quite pertinent to the everyday GOP voter.
For a while, the former president had been mulling abandoning the Republican Party and forming his own Patriot Party. But by vowing to campaign for Republicans come 2022, Trump made it clear that he’s decided to remain with the party instead.
To those who’ve been paying attention, this shouldn’t come as a shocker, because earlier in the week the former president’s official campaign committee filed a Federal Election Commission notice distancing itself from a newly formed Patriot Party PAC.
Apparently, the PAC was formed by a group of interlopers who have no actual ties to the former president or the Donald J. Trump for President Inc. committee.
“DJTFP is placing this disavowal notice on the public record out of concern for confusion among the public, which may be misled to believe that Patriot Party’s activities have been authorized by Mr. Trump or DJTFP — or that contributions to this unauthorized committee are being made to DJTFP — when that is not true,” the filing read.

And so the notion of a Patriot Party — insofar as one launched by the former president — is officially no more, which no doubt will be a disappointment to some.
The meeting Thursday between McCarthy and Trump also put to rest rumors that their relationship had grown untenable because of the events of Jan. 6th.
The relationship of the two faltered after the minority leader delivered a speech on the House floor in which he pinned some of the blame for the storming of the U.S. Capitol on Trump.
“The president bears responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on Congress by mob rioters. He should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding,” he said at the time.
“These facts require immediate action of President Trump. Accept his share of responsibility, quell the unrest, and ensure President-Elect Biden is able to successfully begin his term,” he had said.
However, during the speech he also came out forcefully against Trump’s impeachment.

The pointed remarks provoked scathing backlash from the likes of Trump allies such as Fox Business Network host Lou Dobbs and former GOP Rep. Jason Chaffetz.
It also triggered rumors among media types that a “divorce” between Trump, the GOP in general and McCarthy in particular was imminent.
But as is almost always the case with media-crafted rumors, it’s clear now that this rumor was nothing but hogwash. For, it would seem, there’s still plenty of love in the air, and former President Donald Trump clearly ain’t going anywhere.

As for those Republicans like Rep. Liz Cheney who’ve thrown the former president under by the bus by either voting for his impeachment or signaling their intention of voting for his conviction, their time in the spotlight could soon be coming to an end.
