Gaetz to host Trump supporters in Wyoming as new survey finds Liz Cheney’s political support crashing

Florida GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz will host a rally for supporters of Donald Trump in Wyoming on Thursday as support for the state’s lone congressperson, Liz Cheney, is tanking following her vote to impeach the former president.

Earlier this month Cheney, the No. 3 Republican in the House, voted with nine GOP colleagues to impeach the former president following the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol Building.

Cheney, who chairs the House Republican Conference, claimed Trump “summoned,” “assembled,” and “lit the flame of this attack.”

“There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and oath to the Constitution,” she added.

But in an interview this week with CNN, Gaetz pushed back.

“I have a competing vision for Republicanism,” he said. “I believe that we ought to embrace the spirit and style of President Trump.”

He went on to note that her “principal job” as chairperson of the GOP conference is to “carry the message” of her Republican colleagues.

“Most of the members of the Republican conference don’t believe that Liz Cheney speaks for them,” said the Florida Republican.

“I subsided referencing folks by name for about a day or two,” he added. “But after Liz became more, I think, problematic in her divergence from the perspective of the conference, it became untenable not to identify her as the key internal resistance within the Republican party to the American First Vision.”

Breitbart News reported last week that more than half the GOP conference would vote to oust her now via secret ballot if one were called. Two Republicans being considered as replacements are Reps. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) and Elise Stefanik (R-NY), the news outlet added.

Gaetz’s decision to hold a rally in opposition to Cheney comes as support for her around the state is tanking.

According to a new survey from Trump’s new political action committee, 73 percent of Wyoming’s Republican voters and 62 percent of all voters in the state have an unfavorable view of Cheney.

A memo outlining the survey’s resulted noted further that just 10 percent of GOP primary voters and 13 percent of general election voters said they would cast a ballot to reelect her.

The survey was conducted Jan. 25-26 by Trump pollster John McLaughlin, Politico reported.

What’s more, Cheney is far behind state Sen. Anthony Bouchard, who declared earlier this month he would primary her in 2022, by a 54-21 percent margin.

“Liz Cheney’s decision to vote to impeach President Trump makes her extremely vulnerable,” McLaughlin wrote to Jason Miller, a former senior adviser, in the memo, according to Politico. “It is evident her ratings are in bad shape among general election voters and have collapsed among Republicans and Trump voters.”

The survey, which was conducted by Save America, Trump’s new PAC, aims to embolden primary challenges to all 10 Republican lawmakers who voted to impeach him an unprecedented second time. Like Cheney, most of them also blamed him for the Capitol riot, despite having never called on his supporters to storm the building.

“The strong voter sentiment in this survey suggests there could be similar results for other Republicans who voted for impeachment,” McLaughlin noted further.
