California’s Governor Gavin Newsom has suddenly lifted the stay-at-home orders across the state the week after President Biden was inaugurated into office. He ostensibly came to the decision using previously secret data to predict that future ICU capacity will improve. This comes as 1.2 million Californians have now signed a petition to recall Newsom in the state.
The announcement came Monday after the state has endured seven grueling weeks of lockdown with Newsom claiming that the state is experiencing a “flattening of the curve.” California has claimed to be at the epicenter of the pandemic and that they have run out of beds to house patients due to the spread of the virus. But in an epic flip-flop, Newsom now says the worst days are behind them.
Just last month, California was busily crafting emergency plans for rationing care and decisions were being made on who should live or die because there wasn’t enough room in healthcare facilities to treat all of them. Now, things have suddenly changed and Newsom wants to economically open the state once more.
Oddly, after reporting over 3.1 million cases and 36,745 deaths, California now says that new infections seem to be slowing. All of this coincides with the Democrats gaining political control as Biden takes over the presidency.
Newsom is halfway through his first term as governor. The recall petition will need 1.5 million signatures to activate it. Rescue California has 1.2 million signatures already and will no doubt reach that goal by the deadline in mid-March. They are even receiving donations from some Silicon Valley entities to have Newsom removed from office.
“This Governor’s decisions have never been based on science. Him re-opening our state is not an attempt to help working Californians, but rather an attempt to counter the Recall Movement. It’s sad and pathetic,” California Republican Party Chairwoman Jessica Millan Patterson tweeted concerning Newsom’s moves to lift the lockdown.

The stay-at-home order was put in place in December as the pandemic spread across the state in a new surge. Newsom divided the state into five regions. Four of those regions had the order put in place because ICU capacity fell below 15%, the Daily Mail reported. Northern California was the only region spared.
Some are puzzled over Newsom’s moves because in Southern California, where there are nearly 40 million residents, the ICU capacity is still listed at 0%, according to state data obtained the Daily Mail. Even more bizarre is the governor now stating that modeling indicates that over the next four weeks, ICU capacity is projected to rise to 35% which would be the highest in any of the state’s regions.
Now, restaurants will be allowed to serve diners outdoors and churches can hold services outside. More shoppers will be allowed in stores and hair and nail salons, along with other businesses, may be able to reopen.

The curfew that runs from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. is also being lifted in most of California. San Francisco is keeping it in place for now.
California officials had previously refused to make public the four-week projection for ICU capacities in each region. It was alleged that people would not understand the information and would misinterpret it. On Monday night, they had a change of heart and said the public deserves to know the information behind decisions affecting their lives. But here’s the catch… state officials did not reveal the underlying data for the projections.
Newsom now claims that infection rates and hospital admissions have declined dramatically.
“We’re seeing a flattening of the curve – everything that should be up is up, everything that should be down is down – case rates, positivity rates, hospitalizations, ICUs,” Newsom stated. “But we are not out of the woods,” Newsom warned. He wants everyone to keep wearing masks, wash their hands, and social distance.

A number of Republicans see the lifting of the orders as a political move and being implemented out of fear over the threat of a recall.
Democrats are also confounded by Newsom’s move. Democratic Assemblywoman Laura Friedman of Glendale said state lawmakers have been kept out of the loop on COVID restrictions.
“If you think state legislators were blindsided by, and confused about, the shifting & confusing public health directives, you’d be correct,” she tweeted. “If you think we have been quiet about it in Sacramento, you’d be wrong.”
Newsom claims that the appropriate people have been notified and called the insinuations “nonsense.”
