‘That is fascism’: Texas GOP Chair Allen West fires back at Dems calling for resignation of 22 Republicans

The Texas GOP fired back at Democrats in the state demanding that 22 Republicans resign from public office or be expelled for allegedly inciting the violence on Capitol Hill earlier this month.

Texas Republican Party Chair, retired Lt. Col. Allen West, slammed the Democrats as hypocrites, reminding them of last summer’s violent protests and calling out the efforts to silence opposition as fascism. West’s forceful response came this week as the Texas Democratic Party called for the resignation or removal of the Republicans, including Sen. Ted Cruz.

The party’s Executive Committee met Monday and agreed that Republicans who objected to certifying the 2020 election played a part in inciting the violence that broke out at the U.S. Capitol on January 6 and need to step down from office.

Texas Democratic Party Chair, Gilberto Hinojosa, claimed there have to be “consequences” for the decisions of Republicans who chose to follow through on questions of election fraud.

“There has to be consequences for this. And we believe these people need to resign or be removed from Congress,” Hinojosa told CBSDFW.

“This was a national concerted effort by Republicans all across the country to raise questions as to the legitimacy of this election. And it fed into the narrative that Mr. Trump was worth putting out. And all these people got all riled up,” he added.

Democrats called for Attorney General Ken Paxton to resign as well as the 16 Texas GOP members of Congress who voted against the certification of the Electoral College votes. Paxton spoke at a rally on January 6 ahead of the crowd breaking through at the Capitol.

“This responsibility lays squarely on Donald Trump, Ted Cruz and all these Republicans that fed this narrative, knowing that it was a lie,” Hinojosa said.

Other Democrats in Texas had already been clamoring for Cruz’s head. Rep. Joaquin Castro and his brother, Julian, a former Mayor of San Antonio and failed 2020 presidential candidate, tweeted their demands immediately.

The Houston Chronicle called for his resignation, saying he “knew exactly what he was doing, what he was risking and who he was inciting.”

But West fired back at the party chair and Democrats in general for their hypocrisy and political theater.

“We can go back to 2017, we can go back to 2005, when we saw Democrats are the exact same thing that was done with the challenge of the electors. They don’t have the same type of standards that they want to hold themselves accountable to,” he said.

“And we will allow you to say, you cannot go out there and squash political opposition speech, that is fascism. And that’s what I see happening,” West added.

The Texas GOP last week slammed the second Democrat-led attempt to impeach former President Donald Trump.

“The second attempt to impeach President Trump shows that Democrats would rather play vindictive politics instead of engaging in the business of the American people,” West said. “Vilifying their opponents as neo-Nazis, white nationalists, and Uncle Toms will only deepen mistrust and division in this country.”

Meanwhile, Cruz has made it clear he is not going anywhere, and certainly not voluntarily resigning as senator. He vehemently denounced the violence that unfolded and has continued to do so.
