Gut-wrenching video from Capitol appears to show rioters beating police officer with an American flag

Disturbing (to say the least) video has emerged from the riot on Capitol Hill last Wednesday.  It shows a police officer being dragged down the Capitol steps, beaten with an American flag, and stomped on. No word on who the officer was yet, but it could have been Officer Brian Sicknick, who has since passed away.

In several separate videos circulating on social media, rioters can be seen attacking officers, who were trying to block an archway that leads into the building. The crowd used flagpoles and hockey sticks on the officers and threw objects into the archway. In the violent melee, protesters were throwing crutches and whatever they could get their hands on, at the police. The scene was horrific no matter what your political stance is. One officer covers his head with his hands on the ground as protesters attack him.

Some tried to help another fallen officer who was dragged by his foot down the steps but they could not stop those individuals’ intent on beating him to a pulp while he was face-down.

The officer eventually managed to stand but attackers continued to push him and hit at his helmet. One man can be seen grabbing hold of the officer, although it is unclear whether or not he is trying to help him or restrain him.

Another man then jumped up out of the crowd and punched the officer in the face, hitting his visor, and the officer ended up falling down into the packed crowd. During the mayhem, the crowd started chanting “U.S.A., U.S.A.”

According to TMZ, the officer that was hit with the American flag was either a member of the Capitol Police force or the Metropolitan Police force.

The attack and beating took place on the side entrance of the building which was being guarded by officers. That included the officer who was bludgeoned by individuals in the crowd.

According to TMZ, one rioter could be heard shouting: “Get that motherf***** out of there! Take him out!”

Officer Sicknick was taken off life-support on Thursday. Sicknick was hit in the head with a fire extinguisher during a struggle, two law enforcement officials told the AP. He collapsed when he returned to his division office and was taken to the hospital where he later died Thursday night.

Another Capitol Police officer is being hailed as a hero for drawing protesters away from the entrance to the Senate floor Wednesday, as rioters smashed their way into the U.S. Capitol.

Officer Eugene Goodman glanced to his left and noticed the unobstructed hallway to the Senate as he was chased up a flight of stairs. The officer, at first, tried to block an open door before realizing he was alone and being pursued.

Goodman, armed with a baton, pushed a protester who was later identified as Doug Jensen from Des Moines. Jensen was focused on Goodman and appeared not to notice the open hallway leading to the Senate chambers. Jensen chased Goodman, who led him and the protesters away from the Senate floor.
