President Donald Trump will reportedly be awarding the nation’s highest civilian honor to two Republicans who have staunchly supported him.
Rep. Devin Nunes of California and Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio will be given the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Trump just weeks before Inauguration Day, according to The Washington Post. The president’s public schedule apparently does not indicate that any ceremony is scheduled, however.
Nunes, the Ranking Member of the House Intelligence Committee, will reportedly be awarded the medal on Monday. Representing California’s 22nd Congressional District, the lawmaker was a vocal ally of the president during Robert Mueller’s investigation of alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Jordan, the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, has also vocally condemned the conduct of the Justice Department and the FBI in what Trump repeatedly called a “witch hunt” against him. The Republican representing Ohio’s 4th Congressional District is reportedly set to be given the Medal of Freedom by Trump on January 11.
Trump told Fox News back in 2018 that Nunes deserved a medal of honor, mistakenly noting the military’s highest honor.
“If this turns out as everyone thinks it will, Devin Nunes should get the Medal of Honor,” he told Fox & Friends at the time. “What he’s gone through, and his bravery, he should get a very important medal.”
“Maybe we’ll call it the Medal of Freedom because we actually give them, the high awards for civilians,” he added after realizing the error.
Both Jordan and Nunes defended the president during the Democrats’ sham impeachment process, and Jordan is currently part of a GOP group-effort in the House of Representatives to object to the certification of the presidential election results on Jan. 6.
According to the White House website, past recipients of the Medal of Freedom have included Nancy Reagan, Mother Teresa, Billy Graham, Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as Hollywood’s Steven Spielberg and the late boxing legend Muhammad Ali.
The medal, established in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy, is given “to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the security or national interests of America, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.”
In his first presidential term, Trump awarded the Medal of Freedom to Rush Limbaugh, College Football Hall of Fame Coach Lou Holtz, General Jack Keane, former counselor to President Ronald Reagan, Edwin Meese as well as several sports players, including Tiger Woods, and a posthumous award to Elvis Presley.

News of Jordan and Nunes potentially being awarded the medal was mocked by critics of the president like liberal actress Alyssa Milano who tweeted: “I mean, from here on out the medal of freedom may as well be given out in boxes of Boo Berry.”
