It appears that just-reelected Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse’s attempt to virtue-signal his opposition to President Donald Trump has failed rather spectacularly.
The notoriously treacherous senator posted a lengthy Facebook post Wednesday slamming those congressional Republicans who intend to challenge the results of the 2020 election next week as per the president’s wishes.
Measuring over 2,000 words long, the screed was clearly designed to appease the hyperbolic leftists who’ve compared the legal challenges of the election results by the president and the GOP to the actions of a madman dictator.
“All the clever arguments and rhetorical gymnastics in the world won’t change the fact that this January 6th effort is designed to disenfranchise millions of Americans simply because they voted for someone in a different party. We ought to be better than that. If we normalize this, we’re going to turn American politics into a Hatfields and McCoys endless blood feud – a house hopelessly divided,” he wrote.

A cursory glance through the comments shows that some leftists did kind of appreciate it, though they were quick to chide him for not always standing up against Trump.
“Thank for attempting to explain this. I wish you’d been as discerning for the last four years but everyone has the right to turn around and see this lunacy for what it is,” one wrote.
Apparently, Sasse had been completely in the wrong during those rare instances in which he’d actually stood for conspiracy principles — such as when he’d offered Democrats a civics lesson during Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s contentious confirmation hearings a couple months back:

But at least the critic who complained about the senator having not “been as discerning” was willing to give him some credit.
The problem is that many leftists — particularly those with power and influence — were unwilling to give him any credit, because that’s apparently just the type of petty, unforgiving people they naturally are.
Case in point:
.@BenSasse never met a Trump crime he wasn’t willing to look away from.

.@BenSasse had his chance to stop Trump when it counted—which could have saved tens of thousands of American lives. Now he’s just whining. https://t.co/3fWyTVsdCP

“Well I played along with the first round of Rewarding the Demagogue but I am SHOCKED, SHOCKED I SAY that the demagogue kept up the demagoguery! I could have sworn there was another whole river after the Rubicon!”

You have been enabling this for years. You have stood by and let it happen, even prevented those who sought to stop it. Now you see which way the wind is blowing and you suddenly find a spine? You’re already complicit. I hope it ends your career.

So what’s your excuse for continuing to caucus with @senatemajldr and his party full of traitors.

It’s not enough that he’s repeatedly bashed the president. For Sasse to truly be accepted by the left, it appears he’d have to relinquish his Republicanism itself, meaning, among other things, no defending Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh from fake sexual assault accusations and no fighting back against infanticide.
This in fact is the key problem with the “progressive” left — their intolerant loathing for any one who doesn’t perfectly toe the party line.
It’s why the likes of Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Glenn Greenwald and left-wing commentator Tim Pool are contemptuously called “Republicans” by “progressive” zealots.
Similarly, it’s why members of the far-left will never accept Sasse, no matter how many times he extends a hand to them.
Thus, all he’s managed to do with his unnecessary attack on the GOP is alienate more Republicans. And yes, it is unnecessary, given as electoral challenges are legal — and, some would argue, even normal. So much so that Democrats did it themselves.
“The U.S. Congress on Friday certified the Electoral College vote that gave Republican Donald Trump his victory in the contentious 2016 presidential election after a raucous half-hour joint session punctuated by Democratic challenges,” Reuters reported on Jan. 6th.
At the time, Sasse didn’t complain, of course …
Nor he did reportedly put up much of a fight (if any) during the Russian collusion delusion hoax and conspiracy theory against Trump:
Do-nothing Ben Sasse, just elected to another 6-year term despite no record of achievement, issues another pointless diatribe against Trump and the political business he claims to hate but oddly keeps running for political office. Sasse said not a word about RussiaGate: https://t.co/jlhrLxWkui

That’s why “we’ll primary them in 2022” is a joke. Why wasn’t Sasse primaried? Now he’s groveling to Joe Biden and Democrats and blasting his Republican colleagues while defending election illegalities in key states. Demote him to the minority.

But now that Trump’s ostensibly on the way out, he seems eager to voice his concerns.
