Conservative commentator Mark Steyn torched the government’s top infectious diseases expert for once again, moving the goalposts on America reaching herd immunity.
Filling in for Fox News host Tucker Carlson on Monday, Steyn tore into the “infallible” Dr. Anthony Fauci as the “director of the centers for goalpost moving” during his monologue. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director came to his own defense on Sunday after coming under fire for his always-changing observations and predictions.
Steyn began Monday’s broadcast of “Tucker Carlson Tonight” with criticism of the COVID-19 response and the latest stimulus bill to be approved by Congress.
“You’re the child, they are the grownups, 600 bucks from big nanny, and in return, all you’ve got to do is be grounded forever,” he said, referring to the $600 relief checks being sent to Americans.

After claiming that 60 to 70 percent of the population needs to be vaccinated to reach herd immunity, Fauci then said 70 to 90 percent is necessary to reach this goal.
“When polls said only about half of all Americans would take a vaccine, I was saying herd immunity would take 70 to 75 percent …Then, when newer surveys said 60 percent or more would take it, I thought, ‘I can nudge this up a bit,’ so I went to 80,85,” Fauci told The New York Times.
Appearing on Sunday morning’s “State of the Union” on CNN, Fauci then focused on his comments citing the measles.
“So I made a calculation that COVID-19 is not as nearly as transmissible as measles,” he said, adding that he had made “a guestimate.”
“I think 75-80% for herd immunity for COVID-19 is a reasonable estimate, and in fact, most of my epidemiology colleagues agree with me,” Fauci said.

“You would need somewhere between 70 to 75, maybe 80 percent of the population vaccinated. The number that I’ve been using, again, it’s an estimate. You can make an extrapolation from other infections, I say between 75 and 80 to 85 percent of the population,” Fauci told CNBC.
“OK, but it could soon be 99.99 percent,” Steyn quipped after playing the video clip of Fauci. “How does that sound for herd immunity? As long as the herd is staying home.”
Sen. Marco Rubio also targeted Fauci with criticism this week, calling the infectious diseases expert out for “distorting” herd immunity estimates.
“Dr. Fauci lied about masks in March,” the Florida Republican tweeted Sunday. “Dr. Fauci has been distorting the level of vaccination needed for herd immunity. It isn’t just him.”
