U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar slammed members of Congress, including her Democrat colleagues, for getting the coronavirus vaccine ahead of vulnerable health care workers and the elderly.
For once, the Minnesota Democrat made a point many could agree with, including President Donald Trump who also expressed his view that White House staff shouldn’t get the vaccine before other segments of the country. Omar called out lawmakers over the weekend just as fellow squad member Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was vaccinated.
After dragging their feet for months on extending relief to Americans crippled under COVID-19 restrictions and lockdowns, lawmakers patted themselves on the back for passing a $900 billion coronavirus package to avoid a government shutdown and lined up to get the vaccine.
Omar found it “disturbing” that members of Congress were being given doses of the vaccine while “frontline workers, elderly and infirm” have to wait on the product that is in high demand and short supply.

The progressive congresswoman, whose father died of complications from COVID-19 back in June, has blasted the Trump administration’s handling of the pandemic. But on Sunday, she expressed her disgust with fellow lawmakers.
“It’s now clear that we don’t have enough vaccines for everyone and there is shortage of supply, we have to prioritize those who need it most,” she tweeted. “That’s why it’s disturbing to see members be 1st to get vaccine while most frontline workers, elderly and infirm in our districts, wait.”

She linked to a CNN interview she did earlier in the month discussing reports that White House staff would have access to the COVID-19 vaccine ahead of many Americans.
“Our frontline workers who’ve made the sacrifice to make the country run should be the priority, people who’ve been disproportionately impacted should be the priority,” Omar said at the time.
And while she has accused Trump of “dangerous criminal neglect” on the handling of the pandemic, her view of who should get the vaccine first echoed that of the president.
People working in the White House should receive the vaccine somewhat later in the program, unless specifically necessary. I have asked that this adjustment be made. I am not scheduled to take the vaccine, but look forward to doing so at the appropriate time. Thank you!

Vice President Mike Pence and his wife Karen were given the vaccine as were both House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Ocasio-Cortez took to social media to tout her vaccination, saying she was available to anyone who had questions or fears.
If you have any questions or unease about the COVID vaccine, I got you!
I’d *never* ask you to do something I wasn’t willing to do myself.
Yday per national security policy (PPD40), Congress began getting vaccinated.
I took the jab & am here to answer your questions. Ask away! pic.twitter.com/ZyBgXi7kRl

Omar blasted the “shameful” vaccination of lawmakers based on their “importance” in another tweet on Sunday, declaring that she would not be getting vaccinated herself.
“We are not more important then frontline workers, teachers etc. who are making sacrifices everyday,” she wrote. “Which is why I won’t take it. People who need it most, should get it. Full stop.”
It would makes sense if it was age, but unfortunately it’s of importance and its shameful.
We are not more important then frontline workers, teachers etc. who are making sacrifices everyday.
Which is why I won’t take it.
People who need it most, should get it.
Full stop. https://t.co/JQgMftm5wX

Many Twitter users felt it was necessary for lawmakers to set an example and urged Omar to get vaccinated.
As your constituent, I appreciate the gesture, but please take the vaccine. We need you fighting for us.
— Startled Kiwibird (@lwoolward) December 20, 2020
Please rethink this. Your heart is in the right place but your actions will be used by anti-vaccine voices, especially those who already prey on the Somali community.

Ily but if you have access to the vaccine you need to take it. Clearly it’s not just about you being safe, it’s about the people around you. What kind of precedent are you setting by not taking the vaccine when it’s offered to you?

But Omar’s position was shared by many, including those who have not agreed with the far-left congresswoman on anything before.
.@NancyMace and @IlhanMN will probably rarely agree on anything but both say members of Congress shouldn’t be getting the vaccine in front of others. pic.twitter.com/BgN8p01NSp

I can’t believe there is something that @IlhanMN said that I agree on. Congress & other dignitaries should not get vaccine before front line workers & the elderly or vulnerable.
— Don Haines (@DonHaines10) December 21, 2020
The odds of me ever agreeing with @IlhanMN are pretty much nil.
But there is this: Ilhan is chastising AOC and others in Congress for getting vaccines ahead of front line workers, teachers and those at high risk. This one time I agree with her. And yes, hell has frozen over.— JustLiisa (@LiisaJust) December 21, 2020
Now that I’ve found common ground with my new friend Ilhan Omar, I’ve decided to go all in – I’m not gonna get the vaccine until every WWII vet and front line worker in this
country gets theirs.
Plus, I’m marrying my sister. https://t.co/M5y9g5NFXd— Gerry Callahan (@GerryCallahan) December 22, 2020
