‘Creepy’: New Netflix series under fire for ‘obscene’ amount of gratuitous sex involving ‘teenagers’

Netflix is under fire again for inappropriate and “obscenely unnecessary” sexual content in one of its newest dramas.

The streaming and production company is catching heat from viewers who feel the new young adult drama, “Tiny Pretty Things,” is distracting them from the mysterious storyline by interrupting with frequent “unnecessary nudity” and sex scenes involving teenagers.

The dramatic thriller follows the events at the elite Archer School Of Ballet where a ballerina named Neveah, played by Kylie Jefferson, has landed a coveted spot at the Chicago-based school. But the “misstep” of another dancer who allegedly slipped from the school’s roof and lies in a coma provides the foundation for the mystery as an investigation is underway to determine if there was any foul play involved.

The series, based on the young adult novel of the same name by Dhonielle Clayton and Sona Charaipotra, was not winning over any critics like Joel Keller at Decider who recommended viewers “skip it.”

And while Decider lamented the show’s “soapiness” as well as the “cliched characters and the clunky dialogue,” it was the gratuitous sex scenes that seemed to really annoy viewers.

“Affairs, sex, profoundly inappropriate relations between staff and underage students, more sex, a complex trafficking ring, and, dear god, a preponderance of sex,” AV Club’s Shannon Miller wrote.

“Interspersed dance scenes offer small moments of reprieve and a chance for the cast of trained performers to showcase their skills, but Michael MacLennan’s series seems to prioritize sex appeal above all else, including strong character development, authentic emotion, and a cohesive execution of multiple plot lines,” Miller added.

Netflix saw a surge in membership cancellations in September following the release of the controversial film, “Cuties.” The depictions of little girls and in suggestive clothing and scenes sparked a wave of angry backlash that even prompted U.S. lawmakers to call for action by the Department of Justice.

“The amount of sex scenes in Tiny Pretty Things is obscenely unnecessary,” one viewer complained about the series.

“Why are there explicit sex scenes of the main characters? Aren’t they supposed to be teenagers?” another asked.

Many slammed the use of excessive sex scenes as a way to cover up for the lack of engaging content.

Many just found the many nude shots and sexually related scenes to be unnecessary – and distracting – to the storyline.
