Ted Cruz offers brutal suggestion after billionaire Bill Gates promotes devastating restrictions for small biz

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz unloaded on “a millionaire & a billionaire” who casually discussed how small businesses need to shut down for months in order to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

The Texas Republican fired a tweet in response to CNN’s Jake Tapper and his interview with multi-billionaire Bill Gates who found it “appropriate” for bars, restaurants, and other American businesses to close over the next “four to six months” due to a spike in COVID-19 cases.

Speaking about the latest stay-at-home orders recently issued in California as well as other states seeing a surge in positive cases, Tapper asked Gates on Sunday if he thought more states need to consider taking the same kind of “drastic action” to combat the spread of the virus.

The Microsoft founder and co-founder of the Bill & Melinda Gates Medical Research Institute showed how absurdly out of touch he is with average Americans as he sipped a drink from a cup and gave his sobering assessment.

“Bars and restaurants—in most of the country—will be closed as we go into this wave, and I think, sadly, that’s appropriate,” Gates said, adding that “trade-offs will have to be made.”

“The next four to six months really call on us to do our best, because we can see that this will end and you don’t want somebody that you love to be the last to die from coronavirus,” he added.

Gates thought it will be next summer before the U.S. is closer to “normal.”

“But even though early 2022, unless we help other countries get rid of this disease, and we get high vaccination rates in our country, the risk of reintroduction will be there and, of course, the global economy will be slowed down, which hurts America economically in a pretty dramatic way,” he said.

The tone-deaf assessment set off a round of virtual eye-rolling on social media where Cruz eventually leveled a scathing rebuke.

“Leftists: a millionaire & a billionaire discuss how they think it’s appropriate’ to destroy & bankrupt small businesses across America,” the lawmaker tweeted before offering a challenge.

“Tell you what…halt ALL salaries at CNN & Microsoft, stop paying Dem politicians & then let’s see if they think TWO MORE YEARS shutdown is OK,” Cruz wrote.

According to the National Restaurant Association, about 110,000 U.S. restaurants have closed for good this year.

Small business owners across the nation have taken to openly protesting, and in many cases, defying lockdown orders. California restaurant owners have fired back at Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, saying their very survival depends on the outdoor dining business that is now being restricted.

A New Jersey gym owner who has defied shutdowns faced arrests and daily fines which he said amount to over $1 million dollars, has launched a nationwide directory of businesses that continue to stay open despite orders.

Democrat government leaders panic and impose more severe restrictions, as the wealthy — who have no concerns about staying home in their mansions — lecture Americans who need jobs to put food on their tables. The casual discussion about the shutdowns of American businesses as an “appropriate” thing to do, earned Gates and Tapper a wave of backlash on social media.

“Both have large paychecks,” Richard Grenell, President Trump’s former acting director of National Intelligence, pointed out on Twitter.

“Even if you agree with the message – I don’t — the optics of the world’s richest (or second or third richest, whatever) man telling other people to shut down their businesses for half a year are about as bad as it gets,” Jim Geraghty, the senior political correspondent of National Review, tweeted.

“So at what point are the rest of us going to tire of billionaires – whose lives are completely unaffected by lockdowns, school closures, travel restrictions, and all the rest – telling us good little proles that we just have to wait a few more months?” former New York Times reporter Alex Berenson asked.
