Republicans calling for voters to threaten to hold their votes in the Georgia Senate runoffs are being blasted for their “self-destructive” comments.

In a tight race as incumbent GOP Senators Kelly Loeffler and David Purdue fight to hold their seats, and help keep the Republicans in the majority in the U.S. Senate, some in the party have been advocating for a move to pressure the candidates to speak out more in defense of President Trump and his challenge to the presidential election results in Georgia.

But the move is being slammed by many, including the president’s son Donald Trump Jr., as utter “nonsense” that will only play into the hands of Democrats who are pouring resources into the January runoffs.

“I’m seeing a lot of talk from people that are supposed to be on our side telling GOP voters not to go out & vote for @KLoeffler and @PerdueSenate,” Trump Jr. tweeted Monday.

“That is NONSENSE,” he added. “IGNORE those people. We need ALL of our people coming out to vote for Kelly & David.”

Apparently, many failed to see the bigger picture. Conservative columnist and trial lawyer Kurt Schlichter attempted to clarify the importance of the runoffs to one Twitter user who fired back at Trump Jr.

“Maybe supposed allies should stop encouraging our voter[s] to take dumb and self-destructive positions,” he tweeted. “We all need to have zero tolerance for dipsh-ts who tell people to refuse to vote.” (**Language warning)

“Anyone who has decided not to vote in the Senate because they’re sad because the Democrats are crooked is stupid and we shouldn’t empower it,” Schlichter added in another response.

Trump campaign attorney Lin Wood has also spoken out, suggesting voters in Georgia “threaten to withhold” their support of the Republican senators headed for runoff elections.

In several tweets posted on the tight Georgia race and Trump’s ongoing legal battles there and in other key states, Wood called out the lack of open and vocal support for the president and called on voters to hold the Republicans accountable.

Loeffler, who is facing Democrat Raphael Warnock, and Perdue, who will be facing a runoff against Democrat Jon Ossoff, both failed to secure more than 50 percent of the vote in the November election. They are headed for runoff elections scheduled for January 5 and have been immersed in drumming up support across the state as Democrats are pouring their resources into the tight races to flip the seats.

If Republicans fail to secure the seats, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer will become the new Majority Leader.

U.S. Rep. Doug Collins reiterated the importance of the Georgia races during an interview with Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo on Sunday.

“David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler need to be re-elected, they have got to be elected to these seats,” Collins said.

The debate continued to unfold on social media, as Twitter users vigorously backed Trump and Schlichter’s arguments while some called for a stand.
