Wife of NFL QB Matthew Stafford walks back heartfelt rant on oppressive lockdowns after online beating

The wife of long-time Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford slammed the state of Michigan as a “dictatorship” for instituting a three-week coronavirus lockdown.

In a fiery video posted on Instagram, Kelly Stafford slammed Michigan’s restrictive orders coming in the wake of a spike in COVID-19 cases, lamenting the effects the lockdowns will have on residents and struggling small businesses. Stafford later issued an apology for her heated assessment of Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s “Three-Week Pause.”

“So I’m going to be very blunt: I’m so over it. I’m over living in a dictatorship that we call Michigan. I understand there’s a pandemic, and I understand it’s very scary. I’m scared of it too. If you are at risk, do not leave your house until there’s a vaccine,” Stafford said.

“But shutting down all these small businesses — things that people have worked their life for — shutting them down again is not the answer, because they will not make it. So once we are able to leave our house, once this dictatorship decides to let us have some freedom, there will be nothing left,” she added.

“I’m just over it. I see all these people and it brings me, like, to tears. I — and believe me, I know there’s people out there that are stating, ‘That’s really ignorant of you. How could you say that?’ Listen, I know not everybody’s going to agree with me. Not everybody’s going to agree with my every move I make. That’s life, OK? We state our opinions, we move on,” Stafford continued.

“This is my opinion. I feel for these small businesses. It’s not that I don’t feel for people that have COVID, or the hospitals. I do. But this is my opinion,” she said as she concluded her message.

“I do not feel like — I do not like living in a place where they tell me what I can and cannot do. I live once,” she added. “Again, this is my opinion. You have yours, everyone has their own, and we chalk it up to that.”

Earlier in the year, Whitmer had instituted extensive and restrictive measures to stem the coronavirus spread and followed up this week with the latest emergency order, which took effect Wednesday, which stops in-person classes at high schools and colleges, closes restaurants to indoor dining and suspends organized sports for three weeks. Gatherings indoors were limited to 10 people and can now not exceed two households, obviously affecting Thanksgiving plans for many.

Salons, childcare and gyms were not affected by the order but, as Stafford pointed out in her video, small business owners will be feeling the brunt of the restrictions. Stafford, who has previously criticized the NFL for its handling of a false-positive test for her husband, was attacked by some on social media for her words.

“Alright, y’all, here’s what I do best: Coming back to apologize, after I read some of your things and I get grounded a little bit,” she said in an apology posted in her Instagram story after the backlash.

“I’m really sorry. I was in the heat of the moment. I have a friend losing her business. It’s just getting to me a little bit, so I apologize for calling it a dictatorship — probably a not so smart use of words,” she said. “But yeah, I just want it to work for everybody, and I know it’s not going to work for everybody, and it just kills me to see people suffer a financial burden from losing their business, and also from getting sick. But I don’t know — I apologize.”
