Secretary of State Mike Pompeo gave a confident answer to a reporter’s question about a “smooth transition” of administrations in the White House come January.

During a news conference on Tuesday, Pompeo asserted that the world should have every confidence in a smooth post-election transition, but made sure to note it would be for “a second Trump administration.” His remarks naturally prompted a meltdown by Democrats who are moving ahead as if Democratic nominee Joe Biden really is the president-elect.

“Is the State Department currently preparing to engage with the Biden transition team and, if not, at what point does it delay, hamper a smooth transition or pose a risk to national security?” a reporter asked the secretary of state in Tuesday’s press conference.

“There will be a smooth transition to a second Trump administration,” Pompeo responded with a smile. “And we’re ready. The world is watching what’s taking place.”

“We’re going to count all the votes. When the process is complete, there will be electors selected,” Pompeo continued.

“There’s a process. The Constitution lays it out pretty clearly. The world should have every confidence that the transition necessary to make sure that the State Department is functional today, successful today and successful the way the president who’s in office on January 20, a minute after noon, will also be successful,” he added.

“I’m very confident that we will do all the things that are necessary to make sure that the government, the United States government, continues to perform its national security function as we go forward,” Pompeo told the reporters.

Later, another reporter brought up how the State Department is committed to free and fair elections around the world, and asked if President Trump’s “refusal” to accept the results of the 2020 election serves to “discredit” those efforts.

Pompeo was not impressed with the line of questioning, telling the reporter that it was “ridiculous.”

“That’s ridiculous and you know it’s ridiculous, and you asked it because it’s ridiculous,” he said. “This department cares deeply to make sure that elections around the world are safe and secure, and free and fair. And my officers risk their lives to ensure that that happens.”

“We often encounter situations where it’s not clear about a particular election. We work to uncover facts, we work to do discovery, to learn whether in fact the outcome, the decision that was made reflected the will of the people,” he continued.

“We want every one of those votes to be counted in the same way we have every expectation every vote here in the United States will be counted too. It is totally appropriate, the United States has an election system that is laid out deeply in our constitution, and we’re going to make sure that we get that right,” he said.

Republican lawmakers also spoke about the election results Tuesday and Trump’s ongoing efforts to challenge instances of voter fraud or irregularities.

“What we saw in this last campaign was that candidates really matter, but what you’re for also really matters,” Sen. Roy Bunt said.

The Missouri Republican, who was reelected policy chairman for the Senate GOP, added that “virtually every predictor” of the 2020 race was wrong.

“The president wasn’t defeated by huge numbers. In fact, he may not have been defeated at all,” Blunt added.

Sen. John Thune, who was re-elected as Republican whip, also spoke about the election results in Congress.

“The election made it very clear that people across this country reject the agenda that was put forward by the Democrats,” the South Dakota lawmaker said.
