CNBC’s Shepard Smith repeatedly badgered Dr. Anthony Fauci to impose a nationwide lockdown and mask mandate, even as U.S. COVID deaths have continued to plunge.

“Melbourne [Australia] had an 111-day lockdown starting with 20,000 cases a day,” Smith said. “And two days ago, they had zero cases. Why can’t we do that?

Fauci — who never practiced medicine during his 52-year career as a government bureaucrat — said he likes lockdowns, but millions of Americans who don’t have a guaranteed paycheck if they don’t work (like him) would oppose a mandatory lockdown.

“There is very little appetite for a lockdown in this country,” Fauci said. “There is going to be a major pushback both from above and at the local level. However, what Australia did as a country was very successful.”

Australia has a population of 25 million people. In contrast, the United States has 331 million people. Logistically speaking, it would be impossible to force 331 million people to stay locked in their homes.

As an example, look at Democrat-controlled Philadelphia, which was besieged by maskless Black Lives Matter rioters and looters for two straight days this week. If we can’t enforce law and order in one city, how can we enforce a nationwide lockdown, especially when Democrats have defunded the police?

Fauci said: “There’s COVID fatigue in this country and people would be pushing back strongly. If that’s the case, which I think it is, then we’ve got to do the next best thing. We’ve got to double down very, very strongly…with regard to the universal acceptance of masks, distancing and avoiding crowds. If we did that, we would be doing much better than we are right now.”

Smith said: “You’ve said a national mask mandate is maybe a good idea. Why ‘maybe’?”

Fauci replied: “The reason is, I would hope that we could pull together as a country…We haven’t.”

Smith asked more forcefully: “Is it time for the mandate, Dr. Fauci? We lean on you for advice. Do we need a national mandate?”

Fauci noted: “I would hope that the governors and the mayors do it locally if it’s not done nationally.”

Smith then repeatedly interrupted Fauci and tried to get him to impose a nationwide mask mandate.

Smith said: “You’re the one who decides, Dr. Fauci!”

That’s when Fauci interjected: “Hey Shep, are you going to let me finish?”

Smith quipped: “It’s pretty urgent, doc.”

Reminder: Democrats like Nancy Pelosi — who scolds Americans for not wearing masks around the clock — doesn’t even follow her own advice:

It’s unclear why Shepard Smith badgered his guest, but perhaps it has something to do with Smith’s flailing ratings.

When Smith was at Fox News, his show garnered impressive ratings of more than 1 million viewers daily, even though it was on in the middle of the day.

Since launching his new show at CNBC, Shepard placed last in his time slot and lags behind repeats of Fox Business shows.

“Between September 30 and October 22, The News with Shepard Smith was at the bottom of 7 p.m. cable news ratings – behind MSNBC’s Joy Reid, CNN’s Erin Burnett and Fox News’ Martha MacCallum – with an average of 272,000 viewers,” Mediaite reported.

Meanwhile, Senator Rand Paul — a physician — pointed out what many virus experts and scientists have said, which is that a spike in infections that is not accompanied by hospitalizations or deaths is actually good news.

Senator Paul said: “In the last month in the US we experienced double the amount of daily COVID infections but half as many daily deaths, or a 75% reduction in death rate. Great news, but don’t expect left wing media to tell you this truth.”

Fauci, 79, has worked for the federal government since 1968. Fauci has been the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984.

Fauci went straight from medical school to the government, so he didn’t practice medicine or treat patients. But Americans are told that we must listen to everything he says without question.

In the past, Anthony Fauci sent multiple “love letters” to Hillary Clinton.

In a fawning June 2012 email, he gushed: “Wow. Very rarely does a speech bring me to tears, but this one did it. Please tell the Secretary [Hillary Clinton] that I love her more than ever.”

In a January 2013 email where he called himself “your doctor admirer,” Fauci again professed his love for Hillary.

This is who the media says Americans must obey without question.
