Democrats not satisfied with just defunding police departments across America’s cities are now looking to do the same with the U.S. Department of Defense.
Democratic Missouri congressional candidate Cori Bush proposed the radical idea to defund the Pentagon and reallocate the funds to social service programs in a tweet on Tuesday. The progressive candidate’s eyebrow-raising suggestion apparently got the attention – and the approval – of Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., who retweeted it.
The left’s recent movement to defund the police in the wake of George Floy’s death in Minneapolis in May and other police-involved shootings over the last few months has apparently moved to another level as the tweet by Bush revealed.
The Democrat is vying for the Missouri congressional seat after her primary defeat of Rep. William Lacy Clay, a 10-term incumbent, earlier this year. Bush recently reiterated her calls to defund the police on Twitter and followed on Tuesday by expanding the move to target the Pentagon.

“If you’re having a bad day, just think of all the social services we’re going to fund after we defund the Pentagon,” the registered nurse who was born in St. Louis tweeted.
She sparked backlash online to the radical proposal but many on the left were quick to applaud her idea, including Squad-member Omar who retweeted the comment.

A group supporting Democratic socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., also remarked on Bush’s tweet, complete with a clip of the “Senate Budget Chair after defunding the Pentagon,” saying “bye-bye.”

Bush, a surrogate for Sanders in the Democratic primary race, has been endorsed by the former presidential candidate. She also has the support of Justice Democrats who have backed Omar as well as Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., and Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., according to Fox News.
We’re going to defund the police and refund our social services.
Don’t like this idea? Well, we don’t like dead Black & Brown bodies & broken families at the hands of those sworn to protect us.
The police have failed at fixing themselves—so we’re going to do it.

Anthony Rogers, one of the GOP candidates running against Bush in Missouri, thought his opponent “might be a little slow” after her idea to defund the Pentagon.

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and his running mate Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., have not openly stated that they are on the defunding bandwagon. Biden repeatedly claimed he does not support defunding the police during recent months of campaigning but he did acknowledge that he would “absolutely” support re-directing funding out of police departments.
If Bush is elected to the House in November, she will be the first black woman to represent Missouri in Congress. The activist, pastor and supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement ignited plenty of reactions on Twitter where many, like California Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy, slammed her latest idea on the Defense Department.
Reprehensible. Every single Democrat should disavow this statement from @CoriBush. https://t.co/AFGK5Wengk

I am all for activists become politicians but it would be nice if they attempted to understand how the world works.

Uh huh. Where do you think that funding is going to come from? Weapons??
No, it’d come from personnel. As in reducing funding for military health care, MWR, TA, etc.
Reallocate would be a better word to use. https://t.co/AYkBfvINds

Imagine wanting to defund it in general. It’s lunacy

@magi_jay — With 14 days left, do you agree that people like this need to stop? Cori Bush is on her 10th hashtag cause. We have role-played defunding everything besides Baskin-Robbins ice cream.
