Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro admits he did not vote for President Donald Trump in 2016 but is now revealing why 2020 is different.
The author and Daily Wire founder explained that he plans to vote for Trump next month and, in a nearly nine-minute video, shared the reasons why he was “simply wrong” about the incumbent four years ago. Shapiro spoke about Trump’s stand on foreign policy and national security, pro-life issues and taxes as he spelled out how much the president has accomplished in his first term.
“First, I was simply wrong about Donald Trump on policy,” Shapiro said in the video released Monday, putting out the first of three reasons he said he changed his mind on Trump.
“Second, I wasn’t really wrong about Donald Trump on character, but whatever damage he’s going to do, he’s already done, and it’s not going to help if I don’t vote for him this time. And third, most importantly, the Democrats have lost their f***ing minds,” he added.

The conservative firebrand related how he was surprised to find the conservative decisions made by Trump in many policy areas.
“Donald Trump has governed pretty conservatively,” Shapiro conceded.
“I thought he would not be conservative in his governance. I was just wrong on that,” he continued. “Donald Trump radically cut regulation. He actually saw reductions in the number of man-hours dedicated to dealing with regulation for the first time in a long time under Donald Trump. He appointed originalist judges to the best of his ability.”
He went on to note the particulars on issues like the economy, taxes, and abortion as well as getting the U.S. out of the “idiotic Paris Accords” and the “the even more idiotic and evil Iran deal.”
“Donald Trump is the first president of my lifetime not to start any new wars, which is a kind of big thing,” he noted, also pointing to the the president’s decision to move the American Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem as ell as brokering “the first meaningful peace deals” in the Middle east in three decades.
“He’s resisted using the federal government to control everybody’s life during COVID. That’s a big thing. This is the biggest government power grab of my lifetime, and Trump refused to do it,” Shapiro said.
He went on to point out that, “contrary to popular opinion,” Trump has not threatened the press, the legislature and other American institutions. Shapiro admitted that the president has not been as conservative as he would have liked him to be on all issues, citing some economic policies, but admitted that he has had similar contentions with other GOP leaders as well.
Shapiro touched on the president’s “character” and many of the criticisms that have been leveled against him for his bombastic style.
“I have been very clear on my feelings about Donald Trump’s character. I have serious reservations to say the least […] you don’t have to like Trump’s character, you don’t have to love his Twitter account to vote for him,” he noted. “You don’t have to approve of the crazy or bad things that he says or the way he often acts.”
But he did defend the president “hitting the media” which Shapiro called out as a “pure dumpster fire of leftist garbage.” yet he went on to argue that Trump’s tweets “damage him” more often than not and even die-hard supporters of the president must admit that he can be “petty” and “vindictive” in outbursts that only damage his 2020 reelection campaign.
He went on to make several more points and warned that Democrats can’t be trusted with “levers of power” as they will only “seek to ruin anybody who stands in their way.”
“Here’s the deal: I’m voting for Trump,” Shapiro said as he concluded his lengthy message.
“You don’t have to love Trump’s character. You don’t have to like his Twitter account to vote for him. … But if you care about the Constitution and economic freedom and the security of the United States, you really don’t have a whole hell of a lot of choice,” he said. “You should vote for Trump.”
