White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows suggested that a corruption link between Romania and the family of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden will be revealed “in the days to come.”
Meadows said that Hunter Biden’s business dealings including firms and clients in Romania as well as Ukraine and China, and that Americans will learn more about it in the coming days, he told Fox Business Network on Monday.
“I find it fascinating that some of the monies that appear to be flowing to the Biden family broadly come from Romania, from Ukraine, and from China, the very three countries that Joe Biden was special envoy to [as vice president],” Meadows told host Elizabeth MacDonald.
The Wall Street Journal is slated to publish a story this week detailing Hunter Biden’s business dealings — less than two weeks before the election, though tens of millions of Americans have already voted by mail.
It’s not clear what sort of details the WSJ is expected to reveal, however.
Meadows, a former congressman from North Carolina, noted that Joe Biden is likely to have “a lot of explaining to do” once new details are revealed, though he hasn’t been pressured by media outlets with access to him to answer questions about bombshell corruption allegations leveled in reports last week by the New York Post.
The former vice president was eventually questioned about the allegations and email evidence on Friday two days after the initial report, essentially attacking the CBS reporter who asked for his comment.
“I know you’d ask it,” he shot back. “I have no response, it’s another smear campaign, right up your alley, those are the questions you always ask.”
Meadows said the elder Biden doesn’t want to answer questions about the allegations because they are so damning.
“The comparisons are very troubling,” he told MacDonald. “So it’s not surprising they’d [the Biden campaign would] say, ‘We’re not going to talk to the press.’”
Hunter Biden’s ties to Romania were first revealed in May 2019.
“In addition to his work in Ukraine for the energy company Burisma, Hunter Biden advised a Romanian businessman with ties to the United States, Gabriel Popoviciu, whose real estate dealings had come under investigation, according to people familiar with the arrangement, which has not been previously reported,” The New York Times noted in a May 20, 2019 story.
“The investigation, which came as the United States and its allies were pushing Romania to clamp down on corruption, led to Mr. Popoviciu’s conviction and a prison sentence,” it added.
Two days later, Fox News cited the Times story, adding that Hunter Biden’s business dealings in Romania, as well as Ukraine and China, were receiving new scrutiny as his father’s stock rose among Democrats seeking their party’s presidential nomination.
“Hunter Biden reportedly began advising Gabriel Popoviciu, a Romanian businessman said to have opened the country’s first Pizza Hut restaurant, who came under authorities’ scrutiny over his real estate dealings,” Fox News reported.
In an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity in October 2019, presidential lawyer Rudy Giuliani teased a Biden connection to Ukraine.
“Keep your eye on Romania. Just watch Romania,” Giuliani said (see at the 3:20 mark).
The same month, Interfax-Ukraine reported that Joe Biden received a laundered $900,000 payment “for lobbying activities from Burisma Group,” the energy firm he has claimed to know nothing about.
“This was the transfer of Burisma Group’s funds for lobbying activities, as investigators believe, personally to Joe Biden through a lobbying company,” said Ukrainian PM Andriy Derkach during an Oct. 9 press conference.
“Funds in the amount of $900,000 were transferred to the U.S.-based company Rosemont Seneca Partners, which according to open sources, in particular, the New York Times, is affiliated with Biden. The payment reference was payment for consultative services,” he added.
Rosemont Seneca was formed in 2009 by Hunter Biden and Chris Heinz, the stepson of former U.S. senator and Secretary of State John Kerry.
