Law-enforcement groups blasted Joe Biden for suggesting that police should shoot violent suspects “in the leg” when they’re being attacked to avoid fatalities to deter Black Lives Matter riots and spurious accusations that “racist” cops are hunting down black men.
John Evans, the president of the Buffalo Police Benevolent Association, said Biden’s advice is “incredibly ignorant” and “absolutely ridiculous” because it shows how little he understands the real-life dangers cops face in the field. “The guy is clueless,” Evans told Fox News. “I know he’s trying to appease his left-wing base, but it’s a really foolish statement.”
The brouhaha erupted after Biden said at the ABC News townhall last week: “You have to teach people how to de-escalate circumstances. Instead of anybody coming at you and the first thing you do is shoot to kill, you shoot them in the leg.”
The Detectives Endowment Association, a labor union that represents 20,000 New York City detectives, said Biden’s inane advice could get more cops killed.
“Former VP Joe Biden’s suggestion that cops should ‘shoot someone in the leg’ if they’re coming at them is insulting and demonstrates his incompetence and inability to understand the grave dangers cops face as they protect the public and themselves from violent, heartless criminals.”

Joe Gamaldi is the vice president of the national Fraternal Order of Police, which has over 330,000 members. Gamaldi slammed Biden’s suggestion as “completely ridiculous, “unrealistic,” and a “pandering talking point.”
Gamaldi explained that like most Democrat policy ideas, the “shoot-them-in-the-leg” suggestion sounds good in theory, but does not work in reality.
“Shootings are dynamic situations, and we shoot to stop the threat [not to kill],” Gamaldi told Fox News. “It’s incredibly difficult to hit a moving target.”
Police officers are trained to de-escalate situations when suspects attack them, try to steal their guns, and violently resist arrest. But when they shoot, cops are trained to aim at the “center mass” (the torso area) because it’s the largest target.
Law-enforcement experts say it’s much harder to aim at a leg because it’s smaller and a moving target.
“By aiming at legs, we are much more likely to miss and we already only hit roughly 50% of the time,” Gamaldi said.
Law enforcement officials say the “shoot-them-in-the-leg” talking point has repeatedly been debunked as being less-lethal and effective. “I don’t know why Biden repeated it after I’m sure it was pointed out to him that it’s a ridiculous procedure to pursue,” John Evans said.
Meanwhile, countless law-enforcement groups have expressed their support for President Trump, citing his support for the police.
In August, the NYC Police Benevolent Association endorsed Trump as New York City descends into lawlessness, thanks to the Democrats’ catastrophic “Defund the Police” movement.

Pat Lynch is the president of the NYC PBA. He has been in law enforcement for 36 years and has been the NYPD union boss for 21 years. Lynch said this is the first time during his career that the union has ever endorsed a presidential candidate.
“I cannot remember when we’ve ever endorsed for the President of the United States until now. That’s how important this is,” Lynch said.
After staying neutral in the 2016 election, Lynch said the union could no longer sit on the sidelines after NYC’s Democrat mayor, Bill de Blasio, “launched a crusade against the police.”
In contrast, Lynch said President Trump “earned the endorsement” with his unwavering support of law enforcement, who are trying to keep the public safe from the lawless thugs that Democrats have empowered with their reckless demonization of police.
