The mother of a Utah high school student expressed how she is brought “to tears” every time she watches the video of her son getting spit on and assaulted for wearing a pro-Trump hat.

A West Jordan High School student was seen in a video being bullied and taunted, even being spit upon, by other students because he was wearing a “Keep America Great” Trump hat and an American flag face mask. The teen told KUTV how he was called names and his mother told the outlet how she can barely watch the cell phone video which captured the incident.

The family indicated that charges are being filed over the confrontation which occurred in early September, just as 15-year-old Braxton McElhaney was getting back to school.

“The two girls, they kept antagonizing me, calling me a racist,” the high school sophomore told KUTV. “Saying I looked retarded, and calling me a white supremacist, white privilege, because I was wearing my Trump hat.”

The incident reportedly took place on Sept. 3 and KUTV released video taken from a cellphone which showed the two female students assaulting McElhaney. They pulled his hat off his head, stepped on his glasses and spit in his face. They also reportedly threw his face mask in the dumpster, all while the teenager seemed to exercise incredible restraint and not fight back.

“It brings me to tears every time I watch it,” the boy’s mother Meshyalah McElhaney told KUTV. “I can’t believe that people who are on that side and try to push love and acceptance and toleration of other people, and then they are so against somebody who is just a patriot.”

The Jordan School District told the news outlet that the matter was immediately dealt with but could not comment on consequences for the students involved because it is now a police matter.

“Jordan School District does not tolerate or condone the type of behavior seen in this video,” the school district said in a statement. “Our schools stand for respect and inclusion where all are free to learn and work in a safe, welcoming environment without judgment. His situation was immediately investigated with the support and involvement of law enforcement. Swift, appropriate disciplinary action was taken following district protocol.”

Joe McElhaney, the teen’s father. also called out the intolerance.

The way he was treated, the way that a lot of people are treated with all of this divide that we have going on in our country, it’s ridiculous,” he said.

His son told the station he would keep wearing his MAGA hat but wished people would be more willing to listen to those with opposite views.

“If they were just to like sit down and talk with someone and learn about the other side and the other parties, then they would be a lot more understanding, and less hate from one side towards another,” he said.

McElhaney’s mother started a GoFundMe account for him after people reached out in support.

“My son, a patriotic 15-year-old, was brutally bullied during his second week back and school for wearing his MAGA hat and we have received a massive outpouring of support from people asking to do something nice for him,” she posted on GoFundMe.com.

As of this writing, the account has far exceeded its original $1000 goal, raising over $25,000.
