Congressman Jason Smith (R-Missouri) wrote to Queen Elizabeth II of England, urging her to strip Prince Harry and Meghan Markle of their royal titles, citing election interference and a violation of their constitutional tradition to stay out of politics.
Smith wrote the letter after Meghan and Harry posted a video urging Americans to vote in the Nov. 3 election. While the couple did not endorse any candidate, it is widely known that Markle does not like President Trump after she slammed him in 2016 as “misogynistic” and “divisive.”
Congressman Smith wrote to Queen Elizabeth: “Prince Harry and Megan Markle are using foreign titles to campaign against President Trump and interfere with our election. Today, I asked the British Government to put a stop to it.”
Smith said Meghan Markle’s anti-Trump animus is “thinly disguised and widely reported.”
Smith continued: “It is my view the titles and privileges they retain by permission of Her Majesty the Queen prevent the Duke and Duchess from separating comments made in a personal capacity from their official position within the British Royal Family. Therefore, by allowing the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to retain their titles, and these political comments to continue, the British Government is effectively condoning interference in the 2020 United States Presidential Election from officials at the highest level of the British establishment.”
He concluded: “I respectfully request the British Government ensure The Duke and Duchess of Sussex no longer attempt to interfere in our election or be stripped of all titles, styles, and privileges which they currently retain.”

Longstanding protocol dictates that the British royal family not endorse any political candidate or agenda, both domestically and internationally.
This is because the royals are figureheads and not elected officials, and the Queen has adamantly insisted they remain politically neutral.
Congressman Smith said Meghan and Harry’s politically-themed video is “a serious breach of the British Royal Family’s policy of political neutrality and an inappropriate act of domestic interference by one of our closest allies.”
In the video, Meghan and Harry said:
“When the bad outweighs the good, for many, whether we realize it or not, it erodes our ability to have compassion and our ability to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes.
Because when one person buys into negativity online, the effects are felt exponentially. It’s time to not only reflect but act. As we approach this November, it’s vital that we reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity.”
Meghan Markle is a U.S. citizen, and Prince Harry is a British citizen. They stepped down as senior members of the British royal family earlier this year but still retain their titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
In February, Queen Elizabeth demoted Harry and Meghan by saying they can no longer be called “their Royal Highnesses.”
Meghan’s estranged father, Thomas Markle, accused his daughter of “destroying” a 1,500-year-old British institution and “turning it into a WalMart with a crown” because she’s a thirsty, money-grubbing fame monger.

Thomas Markle — who raised Meghan from ages 11 to 18 — said he was disappointed because his daughter wanted to be rich and famous all her life. But when she finally trapped her prince, she destroyed his family.
“Both of them are turning into lost souls at this point,” Thomas said. “I don’t know what they’re looking for. They are turning [the Royal Family] into a Walmart with a crown on. She’s tossing that away for money. This is not the girl I raised.”
When asked about Meghan and Harry’s video last month, President Trump said: “I’m not a fan of hers. I wish a lot of luck to Harry, because he’s going to need it.”
