Amidst an uptick in COVID-19 cases in some boroughs, NYPD cops will reportedly risk an unspecified form of disciplinary action for ignoring the requirement to wear face masks while on duty as required by state law. In an administrative bulletin reportedly sent out via email from the human resources department to everyone on New York’s Finest, as the Big Apple police department is known, cops received a reminder that “they are required to wear face coverings at all times when performing duties in public areas, department facilities and whenever social distancing is not possible.” Police officials also banned scarves, bandanas, and handkerchiefs “not originally designed for that purpose.”
“Failure to comply with the…guidelines, or other appropriate posted signage, will result in disciplinary action,” the memo added, according to the New York Post. Cops can remove their masks when they are eating or drinking. Supervisory cops will be on the lookout for noncompliance. Any officer who feels he or she can’t comply must notify the NYPD’s Equal Employment Opportunity Division.
In a separate video message blasted to their cell phones, Chief Terence Monahan told officers that “It is our responsibility to set the example for our great city. And do everything we can to help ensure we do not have another hospitalized member bring this deadly infection into our homes, or have another funeral.”
According to ABC Eyewitness News New York, 46 NYPD cops have died from the coronavirus. A memorial service is scheduled in their memory at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Monday. October 5, with limited attendance by the officers’ family members.
Supposedly, NYPD sent a memo to cops warning them that they would face “disciplinary action” for not wearing a mask while on the job.

Back in June amidst civil unrest in the city, the NYPD press office asserted in the context of complaints about unmasked officers that “Perhaps it was the heat. Perhaps it was the 15-hour tours, wearing bullet-resistant vests in the sun. Perhaps it was the helmets…”
Far-left, soft-on-crime Mayor Bill de Blasio, who has a contentious relationship with cops as it is, supports penalties of some kind for officers who are caught without masks, although he has insisted that most of them are wearing them. “Our officers should be held to the same standard as all citizens, all public standards. If they don’t, there should be penalties,” he said.
An executive order promulgated earlier this year by de Blasio’s fellow Democrat, Andrew Cuomo, requires face masks out in public situations that don’t allow for social distancing.
In a widely shared video, an NY student recently confronted two officers in a Brooklyn subway station who weren’t covering their faces. Subway and bus riders in New York City are now subject to fines for noncompliance with the mask mandate.
The NYPD has, as yet, not identified the kind of discipline that it would mete out to non-compliant cops.
