Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden announced his endorsement of a Michigan lawmaker running for Congress who once referred to women as “breeders.”
The former vice president joined the Democratic committee for the U.S. House of Representatives in the endorsement of Michigan State Rep. Jon Hoadley, who once also blogged about “4-year-old girls wearing thongs,” the Trump 2020 campaign tweeted Wednesday, referring to reports that the Kalamazoo Democrat wrote about drug use and sex in a now-deleted blog.
“Jon has been an advocate for working families and better schools as a State Representative for the last five years,” Biden said in a statement. “He works hard for people of Southwst Michigan, and I am proud to support his campaign.”
Hoadley, a member of the Michigan House of Representatives since 2015, is currently seeking election to the U.S. House to represent Michigan’s 6th Congressional District, vying for the seat of incumbent GOP Rep. Fred Upton. The openly gay 37-year-old came through the August Democratic primary with 52.24% of the overall vote and was endorsed by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee last week.
The self-described progressive Democrat, who was reelected in 2016 and 2018, is seen as a rising star in the party, and was also endorsed by vice presidential nominee Sen. Kamala Harris, and Michigan lawmakers, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib. He also boasts the backing of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee
President Trump’s campaign shared an image of Hoadley’s celebratory tweet sharing Biden’s endorsement. The congressional candidate had also tweeted after the DCCC added him and his district to its national “Red to Blue” campaign, in the push to flip the seat in the November election.

But the tweet included a link to a New York Post article reporting that before being elected to the state House in 2014, Hoadley had penned some controversial remarks in a LiveJournal blog named “Rambling Politics” which just happened to be deleted just ahead of Michigan’s Democratic Primary.
Hoadley described his sexual partners as “victims” in a May 2005 post just weeks after he had recounted going to a gay bar to “learn about crystal meth.”
“Tonight I went to an event at a leather bar. By myself. To learn about crystal meth,” he wrote.
He wrote that he had “bulging pecs and huge arms” after a trip to the gym. “Now the boys want to buy me drinks. I let them think they’re getting lucky, get their turn but now I’m the match ready to release my burn.”
“I turn to my little black book that’s commonly called a cell phone,” Hoadley wrote. “My fingers walk as I talk to the latest victim of my sexual conquest.”
The state representative, who was born in South Dakota, described women as “breeders” in a June 2005 post, in an apparent reference to their ability to have children.
“Jen, Liz, and I made it to the straight bars. Glad I went…but my straight fix has been satisfied for a while. I’m not going to lie: breeder=weird/bad dancers. Disagree if you want—you’re just deluding yourself,” Hoadley wrote to the now-deleted LiveJournal blog.
Hoadley, who currently serves as minority vice chair of the House Appropriations Committee, once lamented what a “pain” it was to work with Republicans on issues while he was studying at Michigan State University.
Back in a 2004 entry, he allegedly referred to a “four year old wearing a thong” while talking to a friend about being a flower girl at a wedding.
Democrats slammed the GOP “smear campaign” against Hoadley, calling out the attacks as “homophobic.”
The @NRCC‘s attacks are not worth resharing, but it does need to be called out and named for what it is: homophobic. @JonHoadley we have your back, and look forward to you flipping this seat in November! https://t.co/U2uBVxfi0H

A spokeswoman for Hoadley, who is a member of the National LGBTQ Task Force and the American State Legislators for Gun Violence Prevention, dismissed the importance of the comments in light of his current campaign.
“Because of 150,000 deaths from COVID and a collapsing economy, Congressman Fred Upton’s chances of getting reelected are drowning so quickly that the Republicans have mistaken bad college poetry for a life preserver,” the spokeswoman told the New York Post.
Though the reports about Hoadley’s “poetry” were first reported by The Post, the Trump campaign’s tweet about Biden’s endorsement sparked renewed outrage on Twitter.
