A Republican running for Congress in Oregon blasted his far-left opponent for a dismal track record in representing their district in a fiery new campaign video.

In the video released this week, Republican congressional candidate Alek Skarlatos declared that “Oregon is burning” as he called out Democratic Rep. Peter DeFazio, who has “been in office longer than I’ve been alive.” The 27-year-old former Oregon National Guardsman, hailed as a hero for his part in thwarting a terrorist attack on a Paris-bound train in 2015, now wants to represent Oregon’s 4th district in Congress.

“I’m not a politician. I actually hate politics,” the Oregon native said at the start of his video ad, explaining that he “had to do something” in the state that has seen months of violent protests and rioting in Portland and failed Democratic leadership in his district.

Skarlatos took a direct shot at DeFazio’s 33-year record as a U.S. Congressman, contrasting his tenure with his own record of accomplishments, including being born in the state and attending schools there through college before joining the Oregon Army National Guard. Skarlatos served in Afghanistan and was awarded a Soldier’s Medal from former President Barack Obama. He and his two friends who stopped a gunman’s planned attack in France played themselves in the 2018 Clint Eastwood film “The 15:17 to Paris.”

The Republican spoke with Fox News this week about how recent violent protests in cities like Portland have affected his congressional race.

“Well I think people see the direction the Democrat Party is heading and I don’t think it’s so much the riots as people see the riots and then see that the Democrats are the same party, they want to take away your guns and defund the police at the same time,” he said during an interview about a decision by the state to block the Oregon Republican Party’s statement from being included in a ballot pamphlet because it was allegedly turned in late.

“So I don’t think it really has so much to do with the riots as the Democrats reaction to it and that’s what’s so scary, and that what’s going to push a lot of those non-affiliated moderate and soft Democrat voters hopefully over to the Republican Party,” Skarlatos told Fox News Monday.

In his campaign ad, he called out his incumbent opponent for being “proud to be an original co-sponsor of the Green New Deal” which he said would “plunge many Oregon families into poverty.” DeFazio’s policies and agendas don’t reflect the values of Oregonians, Skarlatos contended, because the Democrat, who chairs the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, “lives in D.C. on a yacht.”

“The only job DeFazio has ever had is running for office. Seriously,” Skarlatos said in the video, adding that the 73-year-old has “never earned a dollar in the private sector.”

“Isn’t it time we had someone represent Oregon’s 4th District who actually lives here, understands our values and won’t sell our industries up the river for their New York socialist friends,” he said in an apparent jab at Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who introduced the Green New Deal resolution last year.

Calling DeFazio’s more than three-decades-long career a “dumpster fire,” the GOP candidate promised he “won’t live on a yacht” if voters send him to Washington to properly represent them. He continued to expose his opponent for being controlled by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the leftists who have taken over the Democrat Party, noting that DeFazio voted in lockstep with Ocasio-Cortez 96 percent of the time.

“Instead of lighting our industries on fire, I’ll be the one putting out the flames, and making sure they stay out,” he said.

The campaign ad and the message Skarlatos delivered resonated with many on social media who gave him a virtual standing ovation.

“I’m not a fan of career politicians. At all.  Neither is real-life hero @alekskarlatos,” conservative actor and producer Dean Cain wrote in a post that was retweeted by Donald Trump Jr.
